We are incredibly lucky this week to have the amazingly inspirational Tiffiny Hall of 'The Biggest Loser' featuring in Fab Faces. Tiff is an incredible woman - writer, fifth Dan Taekwondo champion and of course total hardcore ninja trainer! Everyone here at bb HQ feels that Tiff sums up our March theme of 'bare faced beauty', and we feel very privileged that she took the time to personally answer some quick questions from us. Thanks, Tiff - and we can't wait for your new book to come out in August!
Tiffiny, what does 'bare-faced beauty' mean to you?
I see bare-faced beauty as being under the skin, it’s about having the confidence to live your life passion with energy, commitment and courage. It’s about being free of hype, image or expectation and living authentically.
Why should Australians make a concerted decision to try to live more ‘cleanly’ – and what does this mean to you personally?
To me this is about living cleanly; eating clean, exercising and treating your environment as you treat your body – with respect. You should nourish your mind, body and spirit with clean unprocessed food, moderate exercise and meditation and nourish your environment by eliminating as many toxins as you can.
As an advocate for consumption of healthy and natural foods for our bodies, is natural and/or organic skincare and makeup important to you as well?
Absolutely! I treat my skin as I treat the inside of my body – with lots of vitamins! I use Aspect, Cosmedix and Skinmeidca vitamins on my skin. I know when using them that my skin is receiving an ultimate workout, free from harsh chemicals. I also use advanced clothing technology when training. I wear Proskins slim compression tights. They are both a state of the art compression garment that regulates your body temperature and a natural cosmetic product. Microcapsules filled with cosmetic ingredients such as caffeine, retinol, vitamin E, aloe vera are impregnated into the yarn and massage into your skin reducing fluid retention, the appearance of cellulite and helps you to lose inches. They help to flush out toxins!
Having the platform of being a trainer on The Biggest Loser Australia must be an amazing chance to make a difference in peoples’ lives. What is your favorite thing about your role on the show?
My role on the show is a privilege because it is an opportunity to help others regain their lost confidence and self-respect. At the core of my martial art philosophy is respect: respect for others, yourself and your body. Self-respect is so important because it teaches you to nourish your body with healthy food and your mind with healthy thinking. My work on the Biggest Loser isn’t just about transforming bodies, but renovating minds. My contestants gain confidence to dream again and stop looking into the past and instead, plunge towards their positive future.
We have to mention your Logies nomination. Congratulations! What a fantastic achievement! Growing up and working hard, training for your fifth Dan black belt, honing your writing skills and completing your impressive list of studies, was this something you ever imagined? And what techniques did you use to motivate yourself to achieve these incredible goals?
I owe all my achievements to the focus and mindset gained from my practice of Taekwondo. Being born into a Taekwondo family was a gift because learning taekwondo and continuing to practice the Art throughout my life has strengthened everything: my relationships, my career, my inner happiness and self-awareness. Taekwondo is a way of life for me, be it through the principles of the martial art that have helped to develop my character or be it through the physical development of the sport that helps to keep my body strong and adaptable. I wear my black belt on the inside. It’s not just a rope you tie around your waist but an attitude, an attitude of always striving to reach your full potential, a mindset of excellence. Taekwondo helped me to believe in myself and imbued me with confidence. Once you have confidence you have the power to take risks and follow your dreams. Taekwondo helped me to believe in my body so I wasn’t afraid of competition. Taekwondo also taught me how to coach. I’ve been a Taekwondo instructor for more than 12 years. If it wasn’t for my Taekwondo instructing I would never have been chosen to be a trainer on the Biggest Loser. Helping others to be empowered through martial arts is the best part of my job! As for my writing. Well that’s been my dream ever since I was little. I love writing fiction and non-fiction and without the confidence of a black belt mindset, my books would have never manifested.
How do you marry the two seemingly diverse areas, of training and writing? Do you have a favourite or would that be like asking someone to pick their favourite child?
It’s a fantastic balance. Some people switch off an active day at work with TV, I switch off with writing. I like to escape the screams of “Last Chance Training” and pressures of looming weigh-ins by delving into my stories. If I had to pick a favourite though, it would be my writing. I’ve been writing stories ever since I could hold a pen and my dream of becoming an author has always been stronger than my dreams to be an athlete or coach. Every move I make is a step towards the publishing of my novels. My first novel will be published in September by HarperCollins.
Just for fun- what is your greatest indulgence?
I’m a total chocolate ninja! I have chocolate every week – chocolate licorice bullets, hot chocolates, chocolate croissants. Sunday is chocolate and coffee day and I look forward to it allll week.
