Men’s Grooming: Shaving 101
HOMEThis week we give you the rundown for the best ways to get yourself freshly shaved like a you're a pro...
If you want to feel instantly more well groomed, you can't go past a freshly shaven face. To do it really well, and to look good straight afterwards (read: a shave that results in no lumps, bumps or redness) shave in the shower. The warmth of the water and steam will open up your pores and make hair softer, which means it will become easier to shave off.
Use a face scrub. Scrubs exfoliate the skin, removing a build up of dead cells and impurities (which can also cause acne and ingrown hairs) Scrubs also prime the follicles and brings them closer to the sruface of your skin, making for a closer shave. Using one will generally improve the texture and feel of your skin too. bb loves Lqd FACE Scrub for its gentle but effective properties.
Next, get your hands on a good shaving formula that allows blades to glide along the skin, without 'catching' or scraping. It is also a good idea to leave this on, after applying, for a minute or two before shaving. bb loves King of Shaves Sensitive Shave Gel with is gentle on even the most allergy-prone faces.
When it comes to the actual shaving, always use a sharp, good quality blade (and like a toothbrush, you should change it regularly!) Be sure to use gentle strokes as well. The blade should do the work for you. bb loves King of Shaves Azor System Razor for a supreme blade.
If you have a special event coming up - and can be bothered - you can shave in two steps for a better result! Firstly, shave with the grain of your stubble (i.e. move the razor down and along in the same direction that the hair grows) Then lather up again and shave against the grain (i.e. upwards and in the opposite direction of the hair growth) This will result in a super smooth, ultra close shave. You might even feel like you've had a little time in the barber's chair!
Finally, follow with a calming moisturiser. This step helps to soothe the skin and retain your face's natural moisture levels. It will also help to prevent ingrown hairs. But whatever you do, don't use anything that stings your skin. The old slapping on aftershave and screaming scenario is really not the norm!
If it burns, it isn't going to be doing your skin any favours. Instead, you need something that is anti-inflamitory and super calming. bb loves Lqd FACE calm which eliminates redness and irritation caused by shaving and penetrates fast to soothe, calm and moisturise.
And there you have it! The pro's guide to getting a great at home shave. Try them out next time you are feeling a little undergroomed (or like Mr.Galifianakis' characters)
