As it starts to warm up (apart from in good ol’ Melbourne town), the daunting prospect of exposing post-winter flesh is upon us. Which means it’s self-tanning season once again! Done well, you’ll be basking in the glow of compliments. Applied not-so-well, and you’ll be attracting looks for all the wrong reasons. But fear not, bellas. We’ve got all your essential self-tanning hacks right here!
1. Be Prepared
The number one tip to ensure an even, long-lasting, natural-looking tan is to get your prep on. This means skin should be de-fuzzed, exfoliated (to avoid tan clinging to dry patches), and as hydrated as possible.
Regular body buffing and lotion-ing is ideal, especially at the start of the day before you apply your tan. Slathering on your favourite body lotion while your skin is damp from the shower will also help lock in moisture. And make sure you wax at least 48-hours before, or 24-hours for shaving, to provide a smooth base and avoid irritation (and those weird little dot marks). Get your pedi done beforehand, too, so your colour doesn’t wash down the foot spa drain!
2. Experiment & Find Your Perfect Formula
Make like Cinderella and shop around until you find the tan that’s just right for you. Do you need an express tan you can wash off in an hour or two, or can you wait the eight hours it takes most prods to develop? Are you good at application, or do you need something with a tint to guide you?
The ModelCo range has something for every preference – from fool-proof tanning mousse to the cult Tan Airbrush in a Can, and gradual tanning lotions for fans of subtle, buildable colour. However, we’re especially obsessed with the new MC² products! They all deliver ultra-dark colour for babes who want a really deep, sun-kissed hue, and come in an express mouse (1hr sun kissed, 2hr dark bronze, 3hr ultra dark), a lightweight, non-greasy lotion, and an innovative, quick-dry, rinse-free dry body oil that can be layered over a few days for a gorgeous mocha hue.
3. Start at the Bottom
For an even tan, start at your ankles and work your way up on clean, dry, exfoliated skin (no moisturiser). Using light, circular sweeping motions, apply with your hands, latex gloves or ModelCo’s Blend Buffing Mitt. Go lightly over ankles, elbows and knees, as these dry areas can literally drink up product. Finish with your feet then remove gloves/mitt and use residue on the backs of your hands. If you didn’t use a mitt, wash your hands thoroughly! Wait until the tan is dry to touch – hop in front of a fan if it’s hot and sticky – before getting dressed in dark, loose clothes.
4. Get a Helping Hand
Back to the topic of application for a sec... If you’ve ever struggled with the eternal tanning issue – How the heck are you meant to do your back?? – we’ve, er, got your back. Well, technically, ModelCo does. Their clever Self-Tan Back Applicator means even bachelorettes who live alone can have a beautifully bronzed back.
5. Remove Any Boo-Boos
If, despite all this, you still managed to end up with a random patch or two, don’t panic. Simply slather onModelCo’s new Tan Remover Exfoliating Soap. Perfect for spot treatments or to remove old, leftover colour, this pretty pink wonder makes short work of self-tan. Enriched with goat’s milk and natural pumice for smooth, clean skin, it also smells coconutty and delicious!
A final word…
To maximise the life of your tan, stick to shorter, warm showers – not piping hot, use a gentle, soap-free body wash, pat gently with your towel to dry instead of rubbing, and moisturise, moisturise, moisturise!
