We all want soft, smooth, plump and pretty lips. But our habits, beauty products and environment can leave them dry, cracked and… not so kissable. To ensure you’re always ready to pucker up, here are 5 dos and don’ts for luscious lips.
1 – Drink up (water, not wine)
Dry lips are one of the most obvious signs of dehydration, sitting not-so-pretty right there in the middle of your mug. Make sure you’re guzzling enough H20, especially during the colder months when heating saps the moisture right of your skin.
2 – Stop licking them!
I know, I know. When your lips are dry and taut, it’s a natural instinct to lick them. But try not to! The saliva evaporates and natural lipids are removed, leaving lips even drier than before.
3 – Rethink your lippie
Look, we love a long-lasting matte lipstick as much as the next girl. But it doesn’t matter how many courses your lip colour lasts through if your mouth starts to resemble a prune after your entrée … To keep lips from drying out, look for lipsticks with hydrating ingredients, or better yet, a natural formulation.
4 – Eat right
Dry, chapped lips can be a sign of nutritional deficiencies. If you’re lacking in your A, B, Cs, vitamin-wise, chances are you proof is right in front of you. Ensure you’re eating a well balanced diet full of green, leafy veg, lean proteins and wholegrains.
5 – Use a protective lip balm
If your lips are past the point of parched, you need to bring in the big guns. Our secret weapon is a wallet-friendly pharmacy find, the Dermal Therapy Lip Balm. The concentrated formula works like a boss to hydrate and soften, while forming a protective barrier to lock in moisture. Urea removes dead skin cells so moisturising ingredients can penetrate deeply, while petrolatum acts as a barrier to prevent further moisture loss, and menthol has a soothing, cooling effect.
