Gloss is great, but at bellabox HQ nothing makes us feel as put-together as a fresh coat of lipstick. An instant confidence booster, the perfect lippie is the cosmetic equivalent of a swishy blow wave. It really can’t be beat.
But there ARE a few tips and tricks you should know before wielding your lipstick tube. Here are six of our favourite hacks for pout perfection.
#1 Use a toothbrush to buff your pout
For a smooth, long lasting application, you need a smooth, non-flaky base. (Plus soft lips are all the better for kissing with!) You could buy a lip scrub, or you could just make use of what’s already lurking around your bathroom and kitchen. A soft toothbrush is perfect for sloughing off the dead stuff, while coconut oil and a sprinkle of sugar makes a great DIY lip scrub. Apply the scrub then massage your lips in a circular motion with your toothbrush. Wipe away with a damp washcloth. And try not to eat the scrub.
#2 Set your lip colour with powder
To make any lippie long-lasting, you’ll need to learn the layering technique – lipstick, blot, dusting of translucent powder, lipstick – OR you could just invest in a long-wear product. Like Rimmel’s Lasting Finish Lipstick by the one and only Kate Moss. In eight on-trend shades and both a satin and a matte finish, these hard-working lipstick lasts for eight comfortable hours, without causing dryness.
#3 Do the finger trick
Love rocking a bright pigment but inevitably end up with a lipstick covered grin? After applying your lippie, pop your pointer finger into your mouth, close your lips around it, then draw your finger out. Any excess lipstick will be removed, avoiding your teeth and sticking to your pointer.
#4 Find your perfect red by looking at your skintone
If you love red lipstick but feel like it just doesn’t suit you, chances are you just haven’t found the right hue! Different shades of red work with different skin tones, but it’s not just a question of pale or tanned skin. What you really need to look at is your undertone, and whether you’re cool, warm or neutral.
If you’re ‘cool’, the veins in your wrist will appear blue and you’ll look better in white and silver than cream and gold. Your red lipstick should have a blue or purple base. ‘Warm’ ladies will have greenish veins and look gorge in cream and silver. Bright brick red and orangey reds look gorge. And if you’re a lucky ‘neutral’? You’re a bit of a mix and can wear whatever you darn well please.
#5 Follow this step for the perfect cupid’s bow
Struggling to define your cupid’s bow? Map it out with an X as the first step of your lip lining routine. (Which is essential when wearing a dark or red lipstick, PS.) Create an X smack bang in the middle of your top lip by drawing a line diagonally from the highest point of your ‘bow’, then repeating on the other tip. Continue to line the outline your lips (you can go slightly outside your natural line to fake a bigger pout) using a liner in the same colour as your lipstick. Fill in your lips with lipstick, using the bullet or a lipstick brush. Bleed-free colour and a cute-as cupid’s bow, guaranteed!
#6 Remove super stubborn matte lippie with this household item
If your Rimmel Lasting Finish lippie is still going strong at bedtime (which is a very likely possibility!), a few swipes of good old Vaseline on a makeup wipe or tissue will remove all traces of colour. Including stubborn matte lipsticks and stains.
