Move over orange, because big bold brows are the new black. Spotted on Cara, Camilla, Lily and Emilia, thick and ‘natural’ brows have never looked so chic. Whether your eyebrows floweth over or you’re more follicularly challenged, these six simple steps will bag you a truly wow brow.
1 – You do you
As much as I lust after Bambi-esque brows or Angelina’s arches, it ain’t ever going to happen. My brows are naturally blonde, sparse and flat. Trying to achieve a high arch or overly bushy shape would look more eek than on fleek. Step two is therefore essential, as any brow pro worth her tweezers will know what eyebrow shape works for YOU.
2 – Start with a professional shape
Whether you’ve been overzealous with plucking or a very hungry caterpillar has overtaken your face, a waxing or threading professional should be your first port of call. Ask your best-browed buddies for recommendations and stalk social media for work you like.
A good eyebrow pro will tailor a brow to your unique face shape. If you’re a reformed plucker, they’ll also help plan your regrowth strategy and suggest products to stimulate hair growth.
3 – Choose your weapon
You’ll probably need to do some minor at-home maintenance between appointments, so a good quality pair of slanted, stainless steel tweezers is essential. We can’t go past Tweezerman for removing even the finest hairs (and the cute colours).
4 – Tweeze with restraint!
Always tweeze after a shower, as open pores allow hairs to slide out more easily. Whatever you do, do NOT keep plucking in an attempt to make your brows perfectly symmetrical. Faces are not perfectly symmetrical and neither are brows. Close enough is good enough, or you’re at risk of falling down the plucking rabbit hole and coming out as a ‘90s Drew Barrymore. You can always even them up with step five.
5 – Add definition
Unless you are blessed with ultra-dark brows, an eyebrow tint can be life changing. Go straight to an expert and do not attempt this at home. But while a tint will make the brows pop, it won’t do much to make sparse brows look thicker. This is where at-home brow prods come in. And the choice these days is endless!
Brow pencils are great for definition, and give a precise, natural hair-stroke result. However, they can be a little tricky for the beauty novice, and require some blending with a spoolie to not look too drawn on. Tinted gels (which often come in a mascara-style tube) are awesome for giving a quick, blunder-proof wash of colour, and are ideal when you’re short on time. Volumising versions are my everyday go-to! Gels give maximum hold, and even brows that need no colour can benefit from the use of a clear gel to hold unruly hairs in place.
Powders are great for creating the illusion of volume, and kits will often come with two colours, allowing you to custom blend your perfect hue. Powder mishaps are also the easiest to fix! Pomades, applied with an angled brush, give excellent depth of colour and good hold, but application is a little trickier to master.
And if you want Cara-style bushy brows? As a final step, spray your spoolie with hairspray and backcomb brows against the direction of the hair growth. Your It-girl brows will stay perfectly imperfect all day long.
#6 – Consider brow tattooing
Brow tattooing has come a LONG way in recent years, and is an excellent option for sparse arches. Rather than the severe, solid brows you may seen, the pros now use brush-stroke techniques that create the appearance of individual hairs. The best part? There’s no risk of sweating off your brows at the gym!
