Longer days, balmy nights, swims, sand and Santa… Hands up who loves summer in Australia? There is one downside to this awesome season, though. And that’s dry, dull, damaged hair, from all that fun in the sun, surf and chlorine.
In the interest of protecting your crowning glory, here are six healthy hair hacks we swear by. Isn’t it time you showed your locks some summer lovin’?
Use snag-free hair ties
This is a no-brainer all year round, but especially in summer when you’ll want to get that hot, sweaty mop off your neck. To avoid unnecessary breakage, always use snag-free, metal-free, damage-free hair ties.
Add UV protection
It’s not just your skin that needs to be protected from the sun. Coloured hair in particular a little help to avoid fading. Spritz your wet or dry hair with Revlon UniqONE All In One Hair Treatment before heading into the great outdoors. As well as adding body, smoothing and keeping split ends at bay, it contains UVA and UVB filters to keep your hair healthy and your colour fresh.
Wear a bathing cap in the pool
This one’s especially important for the blondies. Not only does chlorine suck the moisture from your locks, it tends to turn them a lovely shade of green. A swimming cap might seem daggy, but it’s worth it to keep your mane happy.
Give heat styling a miss (sometimes)
The warmer weather means hair dries in half the time, so skip the hair dryer when you can. Summer’s also the perfect time to rock those beach waves. If you’re naturally blessed, take time out from straightening them. Or, if you need to fake it, tie damp locks up in a loose bun before bed. You’ll wake with gorgeous waves, minus the heat damage.
But use a heat protection spray when you can’t
OK, OK. Some girls just won’t go without the hair straightener/ blow dryer/ curling iron/ crimper (anyone?). We get it. But there is no excuse for skipping the heat protectant, and you may as well choose one that does everything but the kitchen sink, like our UniqONE fave. With a whopping 10 benefits (frizz control, instant detangling, split end prevention and more), it smells amaze and is the super-fast, not sticky way to tame and protect your tresses.
With humidity at its highest, it can be tempting to wash your hair pretty much every day during summer. But try to resist the urge. Over-washing will strip your hair of its natural oils and rob it of its natural gloss. If oily roots are driving you mad, experiment with a cute bandana or rock a wide brimmed hat. Stylish AND sun smart.
