Pores. Those pesky little (or sometimes annoying large) holey things on your visage that have the ability to ruin your day with just one glance in the magnifying mirror. They’re one of my personal bugbears and the first thing I tick as a problem area when I get a facial treatment. So what’s a girl who’s rocking plus-sized pores to do? I sat down with Stacey Burt, owner and facialist at Little Company, to get the low down on clearing congestion and shrinking the appearance of your poorly behaved pores.
Always wash your makeup off
“We've all heard how important it is to double cleanse at night to remove makeup and dirt from the skin, but those concerned with oiliness and the size of their pores should go a step further and consider what they are cleansing with. If you’re wearing heavy makeup, we recommend using a lightweight oil for your first cleanse to get a deeper clean. Don't be scared of oil: remember, oil attracts oil; therefore oil removes oil.”
“An Australian organic Jojoba oil would be the perfect thing to use, as it not only cleans the skin it's fantastic as a gentle eye make remover and hydrator for all skins.”
Add vitamin E to your skincare regime
“Vitamin E is a natural antioxidant that helps to neutralise the oxidant effect of free radicals. It can be used externally with the use of products, but also remember the benefits of introducing vitamin E internally. Avocado and nuts are great natural sources of vitamin E and essential fatty acids, which are essential for healthy skin. Think of vitamin E as an internal moisturiser that will naturally help maintain internal hydration, help prevent congestion by making the skin’s natural oil more soluble, and potentially even help to dissolve existing blockages.”
“We recommend exfoliating with enzymes over AHAs as we still find most people are overdoing it on exfoliation. Enzymes will gently exfoliate the skin, break down any toxins and increase the skin’s lymphatic flow to reveal a fresher, smoother skin without impairing the skin’s barrier.
“We use a combination of pomegranate, pumpkin and papaya enzymes which we find most clients respond to without the need for AHAs.”
Use products with AHAs
“AHAs are great for use as spot treatments and on smaller areas; overuse of AHAs may strip the skin resulting in excessive shedding and inflammation, so be mindful to not overdo it.”
Remember that “pores are not doors”
“We are never going to be able to close them completely, unfortunately. If you have an event on and are looking for a quick fix try a refining mask; it will help to minimise the pores, giving the illusion they are smaller.
“To help refine pores and reduce oiliness we love Sodashi Balancing Face Mist; it contains Cedarwood which will help restrict the pores and prevent bacteria from penetrating the skin. You can use this spritz throughout the day over makeup or use alone at night for a very oily skin.
“We also love the MV Organics Purifying and Balancing Mineral Mask. This specialised mask contains super-fine sundried green and white French clay that works wonders for those with oily, congested, acne-prone skin.”
