Bold matte lips are still trending this winter. If you haven’t thrown yourself into the world of deep, dark or bright lips then it’s time to start experimenting with colour.
Matte lip colours often aren’t as forgiving as glossy formulas. If you have dry lips they can enhance any flakes or cracks and turn into a total disaster. But with these simple steps you’ll be ready to rock a deep red or bright pink all winter long.
1. Exfoliate your lips with a lip scrub like Ritual Body Co Sugar & Spice Lip Scrub. This all-natural scrub uses brown sugar to remove flakes and leaves you with super smooth lips.
2. Hydrate your lips with a nourishing lip balm. Apply the lip balm and then blot off any excess with a tissue – we’re after matte lips remember! Wait at least four minutes for the balm to sink into your lips before the next step. A bb staff favourite is Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm Tin.
3. If you have issues with lip colour fading, you should use a lip primer. Try NYX Lip Primer for long lasting colour. As a bonus it creates a smooth surface for even application.
4. Now we want to ensure that your lip colour really pops. Apply a small amount of concealer or foundation along the edges of your lips. Try Chella's Highlighter Pencil in Ivory Lace.
5. Liner isn’t totally necessary with a matte lipstick as they generally don’t feather, but if you want to use one we love Coral Colours liners which come in a huge range of shades.
6. Apply your chosen colour to your lips and blot with a tissue. Pop your lipstick in your bag for re-application during the day and head out the door!
Our favourites: If you like the idea of matte but need a more hydrating formula go for a matte gloss like L’Oreal Glam Matte Lip Gloss.
