When it comes to lashes, big is undoubtedly best. We want ‘em long, curled and thick, but not clumpy. In other words, we want uber volume, and we want it now! If your budget doesn’t extend to lash extensions, there’s no need to despair. Even the flimsiest flutterers can look thick and fabulous! All it takes is nine simple steps.
1. Show those lashes some love
If you want great lashes, you need to start treating them with the TLC they deserve. This means ALWAYS removing mascara and eye-makeup before bed to allow them to breathe, and avoiding rubbing your eyes and tugging and pulling at lashes.
2. Clean up your diet
A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals is essential for a healthy head of hair, and the same goes for your lashes. Make sure you’re getting enough protein, loading your plate with the full rainbow of veg and fruit, and nourishing your body with healthy fats found in avocado, olive oil, fish, seeds and nuts. Staying hydrated is also key, so keep that water bottle handy.
3. Add a lash oil
Castor oil has long been regarded as an excellent conditioner and growth serum for lashes, but we’re nuts about coconut oil. Not only is it safe to use around the eyes – it does double duty as a budget makeup remover – it helps promote big, beautiful lashes due to its naturally nourishing and strengthening properties. Rub a little along your lash line before bed, taking care not to get any in your peepers.
4. Massage your eyelids
Facial massage is big news in beauty circles, but did you know that eyelid massage’s a thing? Now you do. Massage promotes blood flow to the follicles, stimulating hair growth and – the theory goes – resulting in lusher lashes. Another plus is it’s super relaxing!
Apply your coconut oil (or regular ol’ olive oil) to your eyelids and gently massage lids and along your lash line, using small, circular movements. Around five minutes will do the trick.
5. Curl them
Using an eyelash curler is one of the quickest, easiest way to give lashes extra oomph. Use on clean, dry lashes BEFORE applying mascara. If you use afterwards, your lashes will bend and look all spidery, rather than curled. Plus your mascara will flake off. AND REMEMBER –pay attention when wielding your eyelash curler to avoid any lashtastrophes!
6. Use a volumising mascara & apply it right
If you really want va-va voom lashes, you need to keep your eye out for thickening, volume-boosting mascara formulas. We’re big fans of Manna Kadar Bloom Volumising Mascara with its cutting edge spiral-shaped wand and inky black, hydrating formula that boost both length and volume, without any flaking.
The wonder wand contains reservoirs of mascara between each groove and ultra-dense fibre bristles to instantly max out lash volume. Plus, the formula is paraben- and cruelty-free.
To get even more volume, Manna recommends starting with the hard to reach corners, then applying Bloom in an upward, spinning motion to the rest of your lashes.
7. Make sure you prime first
For epic volume and mascara that goes the distance, add an eyelash primer to your cart. Formulated with strengthening proteins plus hydrators, Manna Kadar’s Lash Extending Primer softens lashes, prepping them for a silky-smooth mascara application while adding impressive length and volume.
8. Take a break from falsies
Some occasions call for false eyelashes, but everyday wear can weaken and damage your natural lashes. So, give them a break when you can and let your natural beauty shine. Your lashes will thank you!
9. Consider a biotin supplement
A Vitamin H, or biotin, deficiency could be an underlying cause for your thinning lashes or hair loss. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor to see if popping a daily supp could be all you need to restore your lashes to fluttering good health.
