After sharing some of our favourite products from the Milk & Co. range, we caught up with Co-Founder Lindy Klim to talk beauty, fashion and wellness. The model, writer, entrepreneur and mother of three splits her time between Bali and Melbourne running the hugely successful skincare brand with husband and former Olympic swimmer Michael Klim. Here, she shares her beauty tips and style secrets with us.
Milk & Co. has become a hugely successful Australian skincare brand, how did the journey begin and what has been the hardest part of starting a business?
My background is in modelling and fashion and Michael was an Olympic athlete, when Michael retired from swimming competitively he was approached by different companies to be the ‘face-of’ their products and he thought that it made more sense to create his own brand, so that the business represented something that he truly believed in and created longevity vs. 'face-of campaigns’, which seemed so temporary. Milk by Michael Klim launched in 2006 followed by Milk Baby and Milk by Lindy Klim. The products are Australian made, they’re simple and effective, easy to use and good for everyone - these are the philosophies of the brand, which underpin everything that we do at Milk & Co. We are very conscious of creating a brand that represents our family and our perspective on life - the products are affordable, natural and good for everyone! We experience many challenges along the way like most businesses, I think for us the greatest challenge in our business is in remaining authentic and only producing products that we truly believe in. We re-visit our brand guidelines often and try to take the time to remind ourselves why we launched the brand, so our approach to everything that we do feels soulful.
I loved creating Milk Baby, it was such a beautiful time in our lives when we had our children and being able to launch a range of products, which I had developed based on my philosophies and experience as a mother was very rewarding.
Why are naturally derived ingredients so important to you?
For me, living in Bali and experiencing natural remedies & healing and seeing how nurturing the Balinese are with their bodies and their minds definitely influences the design and development of Milk by Lindy Klim. Naturally derived ingredients have always been important to me and I try to use natural products and buy organic produce whenever I can.
What is your beauty philosophy?
My beauty philosophy is about keeping things simple and effective. I don’t like anything that is too complicated or takes to long to do. Having a family and a business, which requires so much international travel I want to look after my skin but I want my beauty and skincare routine to be quick!
How do you take care of your skin when travelling for work?
I won’t travel without my Milk by Lindy Klim Beauty Wipes! They are extra large, exfoliating on one side and cleansing on the other, for me they are perfect for keeping my skin feeling clean and looking fresh when I arrive after a long international flight. I also like to use Rosehip oil on my face when I’m traveling internationally for work for extra hydration and find that adding a drop of Rosehip oil to my moisturiser is the easiest way to create some more intense moisture.
What is the first beauty product you put on in the morning?
I cleanse first and follow with my Milk by Lindy Klim Ultra Light Moisturiser.
What's the best beauty trick you have learned on a shoot?
Exfoliating my lips before applying gloss gives my lips extra colour and fullness to create the perfect pout!
How do you usually start your day?
When I'm in Bali, I wake up very early so I always begin my day with a walk along the beach and a green juice, having that time to myself before the family wakes up helps me to clear my mind and to focus for on the day ahead.
How do you maintain good health and wellbeing with such a busy schedule?
Finding balance in our lives is a conscious decision that we make as a family every day. We are so blessed to live in Bali – there is something magical about the island, which creates an amazing energy and I find that we eat and live a healthier lifestyle as a family when we are here. Both Michael and I try to spend three weeks in Bali and one week in Australia each month and make sure that one of us is always in Bali with the children. It can be challenging coordinating our schedules at times because we also need to travel to America, Europe and throughout Asia for various work commitments. I try to eat raw, organic food and practice yoga as often as I can and Michael is still very disciplined with his training routine. As a family we are always outdoors at the beach swimming, surfing and being active.
Can you talk us through a typical day when in Bali?
Our children Stella, Rocco and Frankie attend the Green School in Ubud, which is quite a drive from Canggu, so our day starts early! After the school run, I practice yoga and then check my emails and usually Skype with the Milk & Co team in Australia. Depending on how busy the day is with Milk & Co and other work commitments if there is time I will go for a run or go to Pilates before leaving for the afternoon school run. When we arrive home its straight to the pool for some family fun time before we all have dinner together.
You are recognised as a local style icon and have held ambassador roles for Australian brands like Witchery, can you tell us about your personal style?
When I’m in Bali my style is very relaxed and I became a little more 70’s hippie in the way I dress but I do enjoy dressing up when I’m back in Australia or traveling internationally! I love clothes and like to have fun with fashion. We have such talented designers in Australia Ellery, Maticevski, Strateas Carlucci, bassike and We Are Handsome are all favourite labels of mine and I love my collaborations with Witchery! I like to play with masculine feminine dressing it’s a look that really works for me. I can spend hours reading Vogue and looking online at sites like Buro 24/7, style.com, Refinery 29 and looking at blogs like Tommy Ton to see all of the new collections from Louis Vuitton, Isabel Marant, Dior - attending the international shows in February and September each year is something that I always look forward to!
