If you’re like me, you can’t remember who won last year’s Oscars gongs, but you can remember every dress Cate Blanchett has worn in the past decade of ceremonies. It’s film and fashion’s night of nights, and we’ve been eagerly awaiting all the thrills and frills, the gloss and goss. It’s too soon to find out who snogged who at the after parties, but the red carpet’s been rolled out, so it’s time to get the party started. Here are my votes for best dressed and tressed, with a few ‘ditch the stylist’ train-wrecks thrown in for good measure.
Alright, errybody, you can all go home, cos our Marg’s just won the Oscars. It doesn’t get sexier than this plunging, figure hugging number in molten gold, which proves once and for all long sleeves aren’t just for hiding bingo wings. Extra points for the gorge black fringed clutch, the gently styled flowing, flaxen locks, and the light-on approach to red carpet makeup. Loving the peachy eye makeup, brushed up brow and rosey lip.
Munn is a tangerine dream in this zesty Stella McCartney. I’m not always a fan of the one-shouldered frock, but this version, with its mini-train, perfectly flatters Munn’s sylph-like figure. The hue is divine on her olive complexion, which is a flawless foil for her coral lip and blush. Her low-slung twisted bun-pony hybrid is young, fresh, and bang on trend.
I must admit, I don’t love the dress Rach’s worn for her first Oscars nomination (Best Supporting Actress for Spotlight). IMHO, forest green should never be seen, and the satin-halterneck combo has a bit too much of a whiff of the school formal about it. HOWEVER, my number one girl crush could wear a garbage bag and I’d still sing her praises. The colour admittedly flatters her milky complexion like nobody’s business, and her hair and makeup is impeccable. I am defs stealing her green-eyeliner-on-lower-lashline trick!
Is Rooney not just the most exquisite alien goddess on Earth? I simply cannot get enough of her other-worldly beauty and esoteric fashion choices. On the money once again in Givenchy Haute Couture, she is breathtaking and entirely unique. She’s always game for a modern take on the red carpet up-do, and her precision, mini-buns kind of make her look like a glamorous dinosaur, while drawing attention to those killer cheekbones. The merlot lip and smoky eye save the look from being too washed out.
I’m mad for a big bow, and it seems TV’s funny girl Mindy Kaling got the memo. I adore this flattering black sheath on her, with its fabulously theatrical sash. She’s gone full-on, old-school glamour with her centre-parted low bun and sophisticated makeup, and it really suits her.
The colour! The silhouette! The feathers! The crystals! I die. Blanchett is class on a stick in this Armani Privé confection. It’s all just so beautiful I want to cry. The makeup and hair is perfectly subtle, letting the heavenly frock and THOSE EARRINGS do the talking.
The stylists seem to be sticking to a black theme this year, with J-Law rocking it better than most. She is stunning in this gossamer lace gown, with sheer bodice and tiered skirt. Loving her arctic blonde, angled lob styled sleek and super glossy. The peachy tones of her makeup are gorge with her luminous skin and make her blue-green eyes pop.
Nobody, but nobody, can dial up full throttle bombshell quite like Sofia Viagra. Modern Family’s sweetheart is simply delish in midnight blue, jewelled Marchesa with a sweetheart neckline. Sure, she’s sticking to her tried-and-true glamazon formula, but when it works this well, why bother branching out? I’m glad she went with her teased, tousled pony, which adds a modern edge, while showing off those pretty shoulder sweepers. I also NEED a lippie in that exact shade of red. Anyone?
Argh, I LOVE this! Is it a dress with legs, or a jumpsuit with a skirt…? I don’t claim to understand it, but all I know is that it makes me gloriously happy. Gaga is Old Hollywood glamour personified (with a back tatt thrown in), and you can just tell she feels as fab as she looks. Love the high-voltage lash work, and the perfectly set curls. Perfection.
Eat your heart out, Ben Affleck! Bennifer’s better half is divine in inky Atelier Versace. I typically hate asymmetrical dresses, but the one shoulder, one sparkly-boobed gown makes me question all my beliefs. Jen’s hair and makeup is a little uptight and borderline old fashioned, but it’s an elegant pairing for her beautiful gown. Her best accessory, as always, is that pair of adorable dimples.
I had never heard of Quantico or this beauty-pageant-winning Bollywood star before her STUNNING turn on the Oscars red carpet. Now it’s safe to say I’ll be spending all arvo googling her. A breath of fresh air in strapless, intricately embroidered Zuhair Murad in pure white, me thinks Hollywood’s about to take serious notice. A smoky eye, luxurious lashes and berry lip, teamed with a sleek low pony, enhance her natural beauty, while her beaded belt steers the look out of bridal territory.
