Looking to change your hair but not sure what cuts will flatter your face? Whether you’re an oval, circle, heart or something else entirely, there’s a hairstyle out there to suit your look.
How do you discover your face shape? There’s a very simple method to work it out!
You’re going to need two things: a mirror that you can draw on, and a lipstick or whiteboard marker.
Pull your hair back into a very tight ponytail. Then stand in front of the mirror and very carefully draw around the edge of your face. Take a step back and see what geometric shape it looks like. You’ve found your face shape!
This isn’t an exact science, and your face may contain attributes from more than one shape. It’s more the idea of the shape rather than strictly looking exactly like a diamond!
HEART
A heart shaped face is wider at the forehead and narrower at the chin. A heavy blunt fringe should be avoided. Instead, go for long layers that frame your face or a side swept fringe or a side part. Classic heart Reese Witherspoon demonstrates how to style your hair best. Even when she has a full fringe it is wispy and parted to the side with pieces of hair left to frame her face.
Other celebrity hearts include Selena Gomez and Kourtney Kardashian.
ROUND
A round face is shaped like a circle with a relatively even length and width. These dimensions mean you can pull off a centre-parted style with ease. Long hair will help to lengthen your face, and if you’re attempting an updo add some volume or side part. And as Kate Upton demonstrates, posing at an angle or with your mouth slightly open will make your face look less round.
Other celebrities with round faces include Mila Kunis, Lauren Conrad and Emma Stone.
OVAL
An oval face is longer than it is wide. Ovals are quite lucky because most hairstyles look great on them. If you’re going for long hair, a centre part or tousled fringe looks incredible. Lobs and pixie cuts look great on oval faces! Really, the world is your oyster if you’re an oval. Queen Beyonce demonstrates how to show off your best hair at all times.
Other celebrities with oval faces include Jessica Alba, Sofia Vergara and Megan Fox.
SQUARE
A square face has an angular jaw and broad forehead of even widths. Severe bobs and fringes should be avoided. An angled lob that is longer around the face will lengthen the face. Long hair with an off centre part or layers that start around the chin will distract from a strong draw. Try a side swept fringe with a voluminous bob or a full fringe with edges that are longer than the centre.
Other celebrities with square faces include Demi Moore and Olivia Wilde.
DIAMOND
A diamond face is widest at the cheekbones and has a narrower forehead and jaw. Lots of layers and long fringes will look incredible on this face shape. Shoulder length hair looks amazing on diamonds, and you can go curly or straight! However don’t go too short or your face may start to look off balance with all that weight on top. Vanessa Hudgens demonstrates how a diamond can look with and without a fringe.
Other celebrity diamonds include Scarlett Johansson and Ashley Greene.
Remember that if you’ve got the confidence to try a hairstyle you should go for it, regardless of the shape of your face.
