A wise woman once said “your face stops at your boobs.” And when the woman dishing out beauty advice is Zoë Foster Blake, you’d better sit up, slap on some sunscreen and listen. If you want a youthful neck and delectable décolletage (and who doesn’t?!) here are some simple rules to live by.
Use lukewarm water
Resist the urge to turn the shower up hot and let it pummel your chest, face and neck. This will dehydrate and damage your sensitive skin, and even lead to ugly broken capillaries. Keep it lukewarm and splash the water on with your hands, rather than facing the stream front on.
How many times have you seen a woman with the face of a teen, but the neck and chest of a much older woman? If you grew up in Australia, with our harsh climate and outdoorsy lifestyle, the answer is probably “lots!” The skin on the chest is very delicate, fine and prone to dryness, like the eye area, so it needs just as much TLC as your face.
You don’t necessarily need a special neck cream. Most serums, moisturisers and masks that you apply to your face can and should be applied to your chest and neck, too. So make sure you spread the love, morning and night to avoid fine lines, sagging and pigmentation. (And remembering to also pay attention to your neck and chest in your cleansing routine).
The chest area is particularly prone to pigmentation, so slip, slip, slop from your face to your boobs every single day. Choose a broad spectrum, high SPF sunscreen, like La Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF 50+ Ultra Light, to shield against both cancer-causing and wrinkle-causing rays.
For a smooth, clear chest, exfoliation is key. But because the skin is delicate, it’s best to use a facial exfoliant on the area, whether chemical or manual (ie grainy and scrub-like), rather than a body scrub which is designed for tougher skin. Exfoliate the area twice weekly to improve cellular turnover and keep skin glowing.
Try Wrinkles Schminkles
The experts might sing the praises of beauty sleep for smooth, healthy skin, but it turns out that the way you sleep could be giving you wrinkles! Yup, sleep on your side and you will probably notice your chest is a little crinkly come breakfast time. If this happens every night, these wrinkles might just turn from shallow lines to deep crevices! To help plump up the area and keep the skin on your décolletage silky smooth, apply a Wrinkles Schminkles silicon pad at bed-time.
Perk up with a bust cream
For a perkier, bustier bust in just 4 weeks, try Alpha Keri’s Body Slimfit Bust Lift & Firm Cream. The cream is lovely, light and quickly absorbed, smoothing and firming the skin, while giving a push-up effect. It’s not going to take you up a cup size, but you’ll definitely notice a change in fullness and lift.
Rethink your perfume
Or at least the way you apply it. Never apply drying fragrance to your chest, and reconsider spritzing your neck, to avoid pigmentation or a reaction from the sun. Instead, spray your favourite scent in the air a few steps in front of you, then walk through it. You’ll get a more balanced application and you’ll feel a bit like an old school movie star.
