In news that might shock you all (hopefully!), I am the ripe old age of 35. Thankfully, due to a rigorous skincare and SPF regime since my early 20s, my skin is in fairly good nick. I don’t have a lot of pigmentation, and my teenage acne has packed up and left. I do, however, have fine lines that are settling in by the day and my once-pinchable cheeks have lost some of their volume.
Yup, ageing is a b*tch, and I’d pretty much sell my firstborn for a smoother, firmer, younger-looking visage. Thankfully, there are a bunch of non-invasive options for skin rejuvenation these days, with new technologies promising to lift, plump, and generally kick Father Time’s backside. One of these is the amazing PicoSure Laser, which not only has magical tattoo-fading abilities but promises to dramatically improve pigmentation and acne scarring, and boost collagen production for fewer wrinkles.
Intrigued, I popped along to Richmond Skin & Laser in, you guessed it, Richmond Melbourne, to see what all the PicoSure fuss was about. First up, I received a thorough consultation from clinic owner, Karen. As with any treatment, there are various boxes to tick and contraindications, and I was fully briefed on what to expect and given post-care advice, which largely consisted of ‘SPF, and lots of it!’
After my face was thoroughly cleansed and my eyes covered, the zapping began. Having never had laser before, I was a bit nervous about the pain factor, but Karen prepared me well and offered to stop if it ever became too intense. It didn’t. It’s certainly no picnic in the park, but I’d take the rubber-band snapping sensation of facial laser over a bikini wax any day of the week. I was given a hand-held fan to blow icy air on the areas being treated, and it definitely helped take out some of the bite.
My Toning Facial was over in around fifteen minutes and my fresh new face was unveiled. My skin is super sensitive, so I was expecting some serious redness. My mildly pink, already glowing complexion was a pleasant surprise.
Armed with a post-care pack of Aspect products, I was sent on my way, and told what ingredients to avoid for the next few days (mainly retinol). I was told to be extra vigilant with sunscreen to avoid fresh hyperpigmentation (so best to wait until after your beach holiday to book). Karen also explained that any pigmentation was likely to darken over the next few days but not to panic as it would quickly start shedding to reveal clearer skin.
I didn’t experience this as my skin is very pale and I sometimes wonder if I have any pigment at all(!), but by morning my skin was back to its regular colour and any sensitivity was gone. I definitely had a little more lustre and over the next week or two, my skin felt more hydrated and my skintone more even.
Several weeks later (it takes around six weeks to see thefull benefits of the boost to collagen and elastin production), my skin was looking firmer and better than ever. For maximum benefits, several treatments are required, but I was impressed with the results from a single treatment alone. I also saw various case studies of the results for pigmentation and acne scarring and they were seriously impressive.
