Old family photos are proof that no one is born with style, it’s something we have to learn and discover for ourselves as we grow. We’re guessing most of our bellas have passed the beginning stages of makeup, but maybe your sisters/ daughters/ nieces/ friends would like some purchasing advice when they’re ready to start with makeup.
So what belongs in a beginner’s makeup bag?
Lip balm. Minus the blush you stole from your Mum’s dresser as a kid, lip balm is probably the first ‘makeup’ product you owned. The great thing about lip balm is that it’s pretty much impossible to mess up, and it’s actually good for your lips! Especially if you think your daughter is too young to wear lipstick, a lip balm or gloss is definitely a better option. We love the Designer Brands Lip Butter, which is part of our July bellabox! They're available from select pharmacies and Price Attack stores across Australia and New Zealand.
Tinted Moisturiser or BB Cream. When starting out with makeup, our biggest blunders probably occurred with our face makeup. With so many different ways to apply it, an infinite range of colours and shades, and a million different consistencies, it’s certainly a hard art to master. If you or someone you know is new to makeup, it’s much better to start with a tinted moisturiser or BB cream. It’s not as harsh on your skin and it’s much easier to apply. It does have significantly less coverage than a foundation, but that just means there are less mistakes to make! A bellabox favourite is the Garnier Miracle Skin Perfector BB Cream. It's available from Priceline and many other stockists across Australia.
Mascara. There is really nothing else like mascara, in a couple of swipes it can transform your whole look. It’s certainly one of the easiest products to use, and there are so many good mascaras, there’s no need to splurge for a first one. The ModelCo Fat Lash Volumising Mascara will give you the longest lashes ever! Buy it now.
Pencil Eyeliner. At some point you need to practice using eyeliner, and pencil is the best to start out with. It’s the easiest use and usually pretty inexpensive. It’s great for learning new techniques and starting out with eyeliner looks. Definitely a must have in a beginners makeup bag! The ModelCo Eye Define Pencil is easy to use and it comes with it's very own sharpener to keep the tip nice and sharp. Some of you will receive this in your July bellabox - but it's also available at Priceline, Woolworths, Target and select pharmacies across Australia.
Blush. A simple rosy blush can add so much life to the face. It’s especially great in winter and for people who don’t get a lot of sun, but still a basic all year round. It’s important to choose a colour similar to the colour your cheeks naturally blush in, as it allows you to learn how much to use and the best way to apply it, without worrying whether the colour suits your outfit! Your natural blush colour will suit anything you wear because it will match your skin tone. The MeMeMe Shimmer Stack is great because you can blend different variations of colour to suit any look. Buy now.
Makeup Remover. Makeup remover is probably the most important but most overlooked item for a beginner’s makeup bag. If you’re going to start with makeup you’ll need something to remove it with! It’s best to get this when you get the other items so you’re not left trying to get off waterproof mascara with just water. Neal's Yard Eye Make-Up Remover is gentle and easy to use. Buy now.
We hope this helps! Let us know what your first makeup product was in the comments!
