Beauty isn't just about what's on the outside - it really is what's on the inside that counts. This isn't only true of 'beautiful people' but also of your skin. It all starts from the inside.
And lately, I've been thinking about skin - a lot. As a writer of the beauty kind, I’ve always been into what goes on my face. But recently, I’ve been getting really technical about the specifics of skincare. While this is fascinating and all-well-and-good, skincare can only do so much.
Good skin is as much about lifestyle as the products you discover in your bellabox for your skin – it needs to be balanced. Just like your diet! So, not only has our ‘get active’ theme influenced my diet this month, so has my skin.
With this in mind, I talk you through my lunch and why it’s been carefully composed (read: chopped and thrown together at frenetic pace whilst whizzing out the door this morning!) for the benefit of not only my skinny jeans, but also my skin.
So we all know lettuce has a super low calorie content and almost zero fat, but I’m more interested in the good stuff inside. Lettuce improves your digestion thanks to fiber and cellulose. These guys help to remove bile salts from the body (along with cholesterol – so your heart will also stay happy), which means improved digestion. And when your digestion is impaired, your skin can become overwhelmed. So to keep skin happy, keeping your digestion in tip top shape is essential.
Lettuce is also alkaline forming, so it’ll help keep your inner pH levels balanced. Did you know a lot of your skincare is designed to do the same on your face? And as we just noted, your digestion and skin have an identical twin-like connection. Keep one happy and the other is mellow too. Sort that pH out and your skin will show you the benefits in the mirror.
Beetroot is a great ‘skin clearer’. High in vitamin A, as well as vitamin E, which is essential for skin health, healing and ‘anti-aging’ in general (just check out the inclusion of these two vitamins in skincare. Chances are they’ll be in every anti-ager on the market) beetroot is an ace ingredient to eat to help improve your dermis.
It’s a no brainer really. Cucumber is super moisturizing, thanks to its high water content. However, cucumber has also been credited with preventing water retention, so you’ll feel less puffy. It’s also full of silica, which helps to reduce inflammation and reduce aging.
Known as ‘nature’s butter’, not only does avo give you a healthy option to slather on toast instead of your usual yellow spread, it also works overtime in the beauty department. Containing vitamin E and C – ideal for producing collagen in the skin for great tone and texture – it also helps to maintaining healthy moisture levels in the dermis.
Full of vitamin C (again, a collagen builder) these little red guys also contain lycopene. This actually gives them their colour, but is also a circulation stimulant that’ll keep skin healthy and rejuvenated, rather than dull and tired looking.
So this is a small addition for taste (who doesn’t like cheese?) But it does have a few benefits. Vitamin B12 for one, which promotes red blood cell production and helps keep your brain functioning normally. I’ll take it!
Of course, I'll also be making the absolute most of one of the BONUS products from the August box - the delish yumm dressings. My fav is the original (Very Original) but I also love the 'thai zing' flavour. Made in Melbourne - and handmade to bloot - and blended in small batches using fresh ingredients and the finest produce available, these are the 'good' dressings that'll add flavour without ruining all the 'hard work' of choosing the healthy and delish ingredients, like above. Right now, you can even pick up a trio from the bb online store for only $29.95. Bargain! But hurry, we are powering through them here in the office, and today's lunch is no exception...
