"Our love for beauty is strong. So strong that it has taken Emily and myself across the Indian Ocean on a quest to find the very best treatments in Japan. Japan has always had such a reputable reputation in the cosmetic and skincare industry. Think Shiseido, Yu-Be, Shu Uemura - all incredible brands you know and trust. Japanese women have always been admired for their youthful, beautiful skin, so it doesn’t come as a shock that Japan is home to some of the best products and treatments in the world.
We set out in search for the very best in beauty. Our goal, to find and experience the most unique and interesting treatments we could find in a day! Here is our go to list for some of the best Japanese treatments around:
1. Fermented Sawdust Bath: If you’re looking for a treatment that allows you to sweat it all out, then the Fermented Sawdust Bath is for you. This treatment sees you rest inside a bath full of naturally fermented sawdust and oat bran for around 20 minutes with the temperature surrounding your body reaching 40 degrees Celsius.
This treatment improves natural circulation and boosts your immune system by releasing bad toxins from your body. Perfect for anyone visiting from overseas. It was certainly a strange experience and uncomfortable experience, however my muscles and joints were noticeably more relaxed after the treatment.
2. Fish Therapy: If you’re weak stomached than maybe give this one a miss, but if you don’t mind a few “doctor fish” swarming below you and sucking away the dry skin on your toe, then try it out. You’ll be lining up for a pedicure soon after!
3. Snail Facial: If you’re into slime, then feel free to organize a snail facial where real life snails crawl on your face for around 5 minutes. Emily and I did this, hesitantly and were both somewhat surprised with the results. After a lot of squirming, face screws and unruly sounds coming form both of our mouths, we fully embraced the snail, allowing it to squirm around our faces. According to our therapist, slime from snails helps slow down the aging process by healing the skin from any burns or irritations, deeply moisturizing and remove old cells. Worth it if you dare!
4. Poreless Facial Treatment: For those who like to play it safe, and just want to have an incredible facial, I highly recommended one of Japan’s Poreless Facial Treatments. The treatment see’s your face cleansed firstly, with a mineral powder applied to clean out your pores via a specialized brushing technique. The powder is washed off, removing oil and impurities. A hypersonic mist is then applied to wash the face, followed by a face massage. Once you are completely relaxed, a very gentle vacuum is applied to the surface of your skin causing a lift and stimulation of the underlying lymphatic vessels. It works to brighten your skin alleviating any dullness, an area in which I am currently the mayor of after days of little sleep and adventuring! Two LED lights are then applied, blue to combat oils and red for rehydration, with a final spritz of a misting tonic to seal you all in. My skin felt amazing after it, with a dewy glow that not even the best illuminator could achieve!
Both of us are seasoned travelers and look for undiscovered beauty wherever we go, however neither has ever seen so much variety like in Japan. It will certainly leave you questioning your normal routine and see you daring to try something new and exciting" - Vanessa
