Today we check in with Rachael Jade who has her own youtube channel with plenty of handy tutorial vids! Learn all about her beauty loves, plus plenty more...
How did you get started and what is your favourite thing about beauty vlogging?
I started watching beauty videos online after reading an article about Taylor Swift where she mentioned watching makeup tutorials on YouTube. From that point I was addicted, but only ever watched. After a few years of sitting on the sidelines I decided that I really wanted to be a part of something that looked like so much fun. I had seen requests on other beauty vloggers’ channels for a tutorial on how to curl your hair with a straightener. That was something I already knew how to do quite well, so I filmed it, edited it and uploaded it, not really expecting anyone to see it but hoping that it might help someone. Eventually people did see. I got my first view and then my first subscriber and from that point on I was hooked.
The best part of beauty vlogging is definitely interacting with my subscribers. They are beauty lovers just like me and totally understand when I want to spend ten minutes raving about a lip gloss and don’t think it’s weird that I do. I get some of my best product recommendations from my viewers also. It’s like having an enormous group of friends who love makeup just as much as you do!
What motivates and inspires you to keep sharing beauty goss?
Simply being a part of the online beauty community inspires me to make more videos and share what I know. Watching beauty videos from other beauty vloggers, talking to people on Twitter and Facebook about makeup, reading beauty and fashion blogs, all fuels my love for all things beauty and encourages me to keep doing what I am doing.
I also spent all of my high school years struggling with bad skin (and still do), so I know the toll that that can take on your self-confidence. Part of what I try to do on my channel is help other girls like me use makeup, not to hide but enhance, and thus maybe feel a little bit better about themselves. Hearing that I have helped someone learn something new definitely keeps me motivated.
Which beauty look is your go-to?
I like to keep fairly simple. On a day-to-day basis I wear a light, neutral eye with some black winged liner, lots of mascara and a fun coloured lipstick or lip gloss. I also love the bronzed, glowy skin look so I usually don’t leave the house without a little bit of bronzer and highlighter on my cheeks. I have to be careful though as I have oily skin, so I always carry a pressed powder in my bag (no one likes an oil slick on their face).
Who is your all-time favourite beauty icon?
I don’t know if I really have one all-time favourite beauty icon. For me, I look up to any woman who carries herself with grace and confidence. That’s true beauty.
And are there any celebs you think are rocking great beauty trends right now?
At the moment I am loving Emma Stone. Every time she is photographed both her makeup and fashion are flawless. I think Rachel Bilson and Lauren Conrad are always very on-trend and have styles that I would like to emulate. Also, Australian beauties’ Miranda Kerr and Rachael Taylor are always flawless.
What are your other interests outside of the beauty world?
I love to read and recently started learning how to play the guitar, although at this stage I don’t know if you could call what I do “playing” but I am working on it. I also really enjoy going to movies, riding my bike and taking a dance or Zumba class with my girlfriends. Oh and shopping – shopping is a hobby, right?
Have you ever tried bellabox? Which bb product did you love the most?
I have actually been subscribed to bellabox from the very beginning and I really enjoy getting to try new products regularly. The box arrives on my door step and I feel like it’s my birthday every month. My favourite product I have received so far would have to be the Bioderma Sébium H2O. It’s become a holy-grail product for me and I use it every day to remove my makeup and cleanse my face.
If your beauty bag could only ever contain 5 products, which ones would make the cut?
I always find it so difficult to pick my favourite products because I love so many, but for me a must is always foundation, mascara and lip gloss. If I had to have only five specific products in my makeup bag they would be:
- Garnier Miracle Skin Perfertor BB Cream for Combination/Oily Skin
- bareMinerals Mineral Veil
- Maybelline Color Tattoo cream eye shadow in Bad to the Bronze
- Maybelline ‘The Falsies’ mascara
- Revlon ColorBurst Lip Butter in Berry Smoothie
However, the best thing about makeup is that it is always evolving so ask me the same question next month and I may give you a different answer!
What is the one product you have found whilst vlogging that you want the world to know about! (Or perhaps it’s so good, you want to keep it a secret?!)
Dry Shampoo! It is such a versatile product. Whether you use it to add volume and texture to your hair when styling, or to hold you over between washes so that that you don’t “over-wash” your hair, I think most people would find a use for it. It’s also great as a “hair refresher” after P.E. or going to the gym if you are unable to wash it. I use either the Klorane or Batiste branded ones.
Other must-try discoveries that deserve a mention are the Alpha-H Liquid Gold, the Mario Badescu Skincare Drying Lotion and the Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture Vernis à Lèvres Glossy Stains. All are very unique and fantastic products.
Just for fun…
What is the most daring beauty look you’ve ever worn?
I love playing around with more darling makeup at home but generally don’t go out wearing anything too crazy. For me daring is adding a pop of colour like purple or turquoise to my typical neutral palette. I did however used to dance, and got to wear dramatic stage makeup and glitter. Lots and lots of glitter!
If you were banned from vlogging about beauty, what would you write/talk about instead?
Definitely books. I spend a great deal of time travelling to and from work so I am always reading something and never leave the house without a book. I love a good happy ending. I also have been really in DIY lately so maybe I would do videos about that.
Dresses or jeans?
Dresses, no jeans, no dresses… oh I just can’t decide!
Straight or curly hair?
Curly (even though mine leans more towards being naturally straight)
Sweet or salty treats?
Sweet! Chocolate is one of my main food groups.
