Today, we catch up with Tine of beauty blog, beautyholicsanonymous.com Here she spills her beauty goss, as well as a lot more...
How did you get started and what is your favourite thing about beauty blogging?
I started blogging about beauty in 2007. I was living in Malaysia then. There weren’t many fashion and beauty magazines to feed my beauty addiction. A couple of years before I started beauty blogging, I was following a few beauty blogs (also wasn’t popular back then) and decided they were more interesting than magazines. The honesty of beauty reviews was highly refreshing. I decided if they could do it, there’s no harm in giving it a go.
My favourite thing about beauty blogging is learning more about the beauty products that I use. Learning more about each ingredient in a product allows me to know if it’s suitable for my skin or not. Researching the product and ingredients to write about educates me in the process. It’s still a learning process that I love.
What motivates and inspires you to keep sharing beauty goss?
My readers, most definitely. In the beginning, I was blogging more for myself and for a handful of friends who read my blog. As time went on, I started getting more readers. People all over the world were leaving comments on my blog. My friends, who also happen to be beauty bloggers, also encourage me daily to want to write more. Without them, without my readers, I would have stopped blogging a long time ago.
Which beauty look is your go-to?
Simple and classic. Neutral colours are my thing. Blush, always, to give the face a healthy pop of colour. As for lippies, it depends on my mood. I can go neutral or add a slick of bright red to jazz up the look. That’s the beauty of makeup. Anything goes.
Who is your all-time favourite beauty icon?
My mother. She taught me to use sunscreen when I was growing up (sunscreens weren’t popular in Malaysia back then), which was the best piece of anti-aging advice a girl could get. I loved watching her get ready when she goes out. She had (still has!) a dressing table full of beauty products that I would nick during the day when she’s at work. She also has the most extensive range of perfumes I’ve ever seen (thanks to Dad, who buys her one on each of his business trips).
And are there any celebs you think are rocking great beauty trends right now?
I don’t really follow celebrities’ beauty trends. Having said that, I think any lady who can rock bright red lips are more than all right in my books.
What are your other interests outside of the beauty world?
I love reading. I also love working with my hands, so making my own jewellery is another favourite past time of mine. I enjoy cooking too; I find it quite cathartic after a stressful day (the pummelling and chopping help heaps).
Have you ever tried bellabox? Which bb product did you love the most?
Yep! My favourite is the Pangea Organics Pyrenees Lavender with Cardamom Lip Balm. It wasn’t something I expected to like, given that I’m not a fan of cardamom. Happy to find out that the taste is very subtle (the aroma lavender was stronger, which I love). It’s one of my favourite lip balms and I use this every night before bed.
What is the one product you have found whilst blogging that you want the world to know about! (Or perhaps it’s so good, you want to keep it a secret?!)
Liquid eyeliner! Before I started blogging about beauty, I envied women who could use liquid eyeliner so effortlessly. Back then I couldn’t even line my eyes properly with a pencil liner let alone even venture to liquid eyeliners. My resolution last year was to study how bloggers do it on Youtube, practise and master the art of applying liquid eyeliner. Now I’m proud to say that I’ve finally aced it. There are no specific eyeliners that I must have; as long as it’s a firm felt-tip liquid eyeliner, it will work for me.
If you were banned from blogging about beauty, what would you write/talk about instead?
Oh dear this is a toughie. I’ve never been asked this question before! Let’s see. I guess I’ll be writing more about my life, what I like to do, talk a bit about the books I’ve been reading, food I’ve been cooking and so on. I started blogging on a personal blog before moving on to blogging about beauty. If I was banned from blogging about beauty (heaven forbid!), I’ll return to personal blogging.
Dresses or jeans?
I’m a jeans girl through and through. Usually when I’m in a dress, friends would ask “ooh it must be a special occasion today”. It does get boring at times and I’m trying to break out of my jeans rut and starting to wear more dresses now. Summer’s a good time for dresses anyway.
Straight or curly hair?
Straight please. I have very thick, coarse, wavy and incredibly frizzy hair that I find unmanageable. It’s just easier to have straight manageable hair and be done with it. Also, I had my hair permed in my mid 20s and that was a big mistake I’ve learned to never, EVER perm my hair again.
Cats or dogs?
Dogs. Always. They love you unconditionally.
