We’re coming into that kind of season again: Baby Season! They say the next couple of months (July, August, and September) have the most births in Australia as it’s roughly 9 months after the warm, holiday season. Nothing seems to spark the circulation of new baby names like celebrity births, and there’s certainly been plenty in the last few years. So in preparation for all those baby showers we’ll all be attending soon, and the name guessing games that go along with them, we thought we’d share our guesses at the trending baby names for 2014.
Girls Names
Penelope: Born 2012 to TV star, fashion designer and model (best known for Keeping Up With the Kardashian’s) Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick, TV star and business man, we think Penelope is a fun, feminine name, which we’re sure will catch on. The name has already increased in popularity since her birth, and we believe it will continue to do so!
Harper: Already the name of David and Victoria Beckham’s daughter (2011), it is more recently the name of The Office and Blades of Glory star, Jenna Fischer’s daughter (2014). In fact, Harper has been a very popular celebrity baby name in recent years, and we’re sure the celebrity fascination with the name will make its way into mainstream society. Other celebrities with a daughter named Harper include: Neil Patrick Harris and Lisa Marie Presley.
Willow: I’m sure we all know movie star, Will Smith’s daughter Willow from her single ‘Whip My Hair’, but the name hasn’t really caught on just yet. We think singer Pink naming her daughter Willow more recently (2011), will help the name become more popular.
Hazel: Actress (Devil Wears Prada, The Young Victoria) Emily Blunt and Actor (The Office, It’s Complicated) John Krasinskis, named their daughter Hazel February 2014. It is relatively old fashioned, but a very sweet name that we believe Australian couple will really like. It is also the name of Julia Robert’s daughter, who will be turning 10 this year along with her twin brother Phinnaeus ‘Finn’.
Sienna: Supermodel and Victoria’s Secret Angel Adriana Lima and her then husband Marko Jaric (NBA player) had daughter Sienna, September 2012. We love the name Sienna, it’s feminine and exotic, but it’s still common enough that it could be a name for anyone’s daughter. We think there will be plenty of Sienna’s in the next few years!
Boys
Luca: Beloved actress, singer and writer, Hilary Duff and her then husband, Canadian NHL player, Mike Comrie, welcomed son Luca into the world March 2012. ‘Luke’ has been a favourite name since the Bible days, and the small twist to the name certainly makes it more unique. We are sure that Luca will be a popular name in Australia very soon!
Mason: Kourtney Kardashian makes the list again with her son Mason (born 2009). Mason is also the name of singer, dancer, actor Ne-Yo’s son (2011). Mason has been a popular name in the past and with this celebrity encouragement, it’s sure to hit high on the common name lists soon!
Angelo: Angelo was born to English singer and songwriter Adele in October 2012. It’s an old Italian name, the male equivalent to Angela, that may just get swept up into modern times with the help of Adele.
Micah: Grey’s Anatomy star Sarah Drew gave birth to son Micah January 2012. A variation on the very common and popular name, Michael, we are sure people will adopt this name into their lists. It’s already become quite a popular name in America, so it will probably spread to Australia soon!
George: If we are sure about any name on this list becoming more popular, it’s George. Born to Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William, Duke of Cambridge in July 2013, George is a common enough name that is about to become a lot more popular! Royal names always make their way to the top of lists here in Australia, William has been at the top of boy’s names for many years after all.
Names we don’t think will catch on:
North: TV star, model and designer Kim Kardashian and her now husband singer Kanye West welcomed daughter North West, or ‘Nori’, into the world in 2013. As influential as Kim and Kanye are, we’re sorry to say we don’t think this name will be making its way into popular culture anytime soon!
Blue Ivy: Singer and actress Beyonce and singer Jay-Z had their first child in 2012, daughter Blue Ivy. Despite very recently being announced world’s most powerful celebrity by Forbes’ Magazine, we’re not sure Beyonce’s baby naming is what people find most influential!
