To round out our month of fashion here at bellabox, we talk to the amazing Carly Harman, who won the Electrolux 6 month paid apprenticeship with Alex Perry in his Sydney studio late last year! Since then, Carly (originally from Geelong in Victoria) has relocated to Sydney to undertake new and exciting challenges in her role as Alex Perry's fashion apprentice. Carly not only created an eyecatching entry to get her noticed in the competition, but stood apart from the other contestants by being highly trained in fashion design. Having studied fashion at the Gordon in Geelong, Carly furthered her skills in Couture Techniques at the Paris American Academy in France. Read on for Carly's inside scoop on what it is really like to work in the fashion world, as well as her top beauty picks!
Carly and Alex
Tell us a little bit about your role at Alex Perry – is it as glamourous working in the fashion industry as people think it is?
My role at Alex Perry is very diverse. Every single day brings new and exciting challenges. Some days I’ll be helping the ladies in the work room with patterns, cutting, hand sewing and finishing. Even helping Alex fit celebrities. Other days I’ll be helping out in the Alex Perry store at the Strand Arcade, helping drop off stock to David Jones, tagging and preparing stock to go in store or going out with Alex and assisting him with things such as the Specsavers advertisement. The fashion industry is definitely not a glamous place to work in, however, for me, working at Alex Perry is an absolute dream! I really enjoy being behind the scenes, bringing sketches to life.
You have spent some time studying in Paris, one of the world’s most iconic sartorial destinations! What is your favourite thing about Parisian style?
My favourite thing about Parisian style is the fact it is so stylish yet effortless at the same time.

Working in the fashion industry must be fun but also demanding! Is there a lot of pressure, day to day, to look good - or is that left to the models?
I think there is definitely expectations to look good, expecially at Alex Perry. In this industry people take you much more seriously if you present yourself well. I have always loved dressing up and wearing my heels to work so it hasn't been a problem for me.
What beauty items can’t you live without?
Beauty items I cant live without- my Napoleon make up, red lipstick and nude nail polish.
For girls who love these products as much as Carly, we recommend Napoleon Perdis Auto Pilot Pre-Foundation Primer, Savoir Fare Lipstick in Risque and Ozotic Nail Polish in #356 Beige.

What addition to your wardrobe are you craving most right now?
I am craving a new pair of black heels. I wear them so often and you can never have too many.
Finally, if you had to pick just one, would you choose lipstick or nail polish?
I'd have to choose lipstick!
The lovely Carly!
