Hands up who has seen 'The Sapphires' yet? Whether you took a trip to the cinema to see it or not, there's no doubt that Jessica Mauboy would've crossed your radar by now. This stunning Aussie singer, remembered from her Idol days, now turned actress, stars in the hit film, which has not only had a positive impact on Australian Film industry, but has also further encouraged the mainstream representation of indigenous Australians in film. Read on for more on this amazing home-grown beauty and our favourite of Jess' looks to emulate for yourself!
Was there an Idol fan that didn't fall in love with the sweet face and soulful voice of Jessica Mauboy when she first appeared on our TV screens to audition for the fourth season of the hit talent show in 2006? Not likely. The 16 year old wowed judges and the crowd with her rendition of Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing" and progressed all the way to the finale, where she came in as the runner up for the series. This is where Jess' career could've gone the way of so many other reality TV singers - release a few catchy pop tunes but never really shake the Idol tag.
However, since splitting from the group Young Divas and recording her own albums, Jess has instead began to follow the highly successful path of the rare few reality stars that are able to shake their talent show origins off. Jennifer Hudson did it with her amazing Effie role in Dreamgirls, and Jess seems to have followed suit starring in her own fair share of musically inspired movies - the latest being The Sapphires, which also stars the talented Deborah Mailman, directed by Wayne Blair.
Whilst the comparisons to the US Dreamgirls film and the The Sapphires have been many, Jess' film tackles issues unique to Australian's and our still recent, national history, telling the story of a group of Aboriginal singers who travelled from a mission in Victoria to sing for American troops during the midst of the Vietnam war. It's ability to draw attention to Aboriginal issues yet remain upbeat saw it receive a standing ovation at the presitgious Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.
Yet Jess' lead role and amazing vocals in the film weren't the only thing we took notice of! Her stunning looks and fun sense of style herrald her amazing voice and bubbly persona - and deserve to bring in a bit of props for this fab Aussie star too! Here are a few of our favourite's when it comes to Jess' fun beauty and fashionable style sensibilities:
Gotcha Glow Girl
Jess looked amazing in lilac when promoting her film at Cannes! Not only did her frock offset the lovely caramel tones of her skin perfectly, but her complexion was insanely glowy too - not to mention that décolletage! Jess' deep v-neck dress and her great skin proves that your face shouldn't be the one stealing all the good beauty products - it is just as important to look after your neck and upper chest too. Ageing here is just as (if not more) evident than on your dial. Look for hydrating products to keep yours soft and radiant as well as illuminators to add a touch of shimmer. Try the You, Me & Everybody Sumptuous Skin Mousse, which has a lovely foaming texture and is perfect for this area as it's gentle enough for use on the face as well as the body. If you dare to bare, using a little of your regular illuminator on your collar bones and between your cleavage will also add a lovely, yet subtle spring-time glow, that radiates healthy skin.
This time, on home soil and stepping out at the ARIAS Jess opted for a smokey eye and a messy top knot. I personally love this look as it isn't too dressy - and the ARIAS are all about being a little individual, artistic and not super formal. To steal Jess' look for yourself, you'll need a few things in your beauty bag. Firstly, tackle the top knot. If you find these hair styles hurt your head, reach for softer, more hair-friendly ties. These won't pull at your strands like cheaper ties might, which means less hair 'do related headaches. Winner! Try Twistband hair ties, which are kind to your head and become hidden perfectly after a few strategically placed hair strands with bobby pins. For the eyes? Look no further than the MeMeMe Create the Look Pack in Smokey Eyes which comes with a smokey trio eyeshadow palette, Eyeline clay, Precision Eye Definer and LashAttack mascara - everything you'll need to ace your eyes, plus a how-to guide for beginners!
Divine Shimmer and Shine
On the RC at Cannes Jess wowed in shimmering silver - and boy did her hair do a lot of the shining too! Shiney locks are healthy locks, so to achieve them for yourself, you really need to look after your strands. We love USpa's Beehold styling gel which is perfect for all hair types and works over time to caress tresses in a number of ways. A few include - providing shaping, style-retention, shine and body to hair as well as thermal protection against heat styling. Wow! Jess' midnight black lashes also gave that shining mega-watt star style to her look. Australis Lash TLC Conditioning Mascara, containing Vitamins E and B5 for protection and nourishment will keep your lashes feeling and looking good. The curling and lengthening formula is also perfect for special occasion lashes like Jess'.
Do you love Jess as much as us? Have you seen The Sapphires yet? Which of her looks is your favourite? Please share! - Lauren
