This week, we've voted with our hearts, in the same way that we like to vote with our TV remotes, and chosen hilarious 'Hannah' from Girls, otherwise known as the show's creator Lena Dunham, as our Fab Face. Read on for more about this incredibly talented gal...
Let's preface this article by saying if you haven't yet watched Girls, you should! The new show, which draws comparisons to Sex and the City (unfairly in my opinion- they really are very different) and follows the lives of four, recently out of college girls, capturing the seemingly insignificant, but ultimately defining moments of their lives as they try to maintain friendships, realise what exactly they want from the guys in their lives, land their first 'real' jobs and pay their rent in New York City. I agree, it kind of does sound a little SATC but Girls is much grittier and realistic. Oh, and fashion-wise, it's more fuelled by woolen tights, flats and pilling cardigans rather than Fendi baguettes, cocktail dresses and Manolos. But trust us, it makes for some very humorous and seemingly honest viewing!
Girls is all thanks to Lena Dunham, who is one of the newest and most hotly anticipated young actresses, writers and directors of the moment. After studying creative writing, Lena released her first film Tiny Furniture to critical acclaim - it won Best First Screenplay at the Independent Spirit Awards in 2010. Turning her hand to the small screen has also been a winning move for Lena, with Girls already nominated for a Critic's Choice Television Award and a TCA Award.
We must admit, we have little bit of a girl crush on Lena! I mean, we've got to give serious props to someone who puts their dignity on the line for the purposes of portraying a 'real' life experience - and no, not in the way Snooki does! Plus, anyone that could win the attention, affection and friendship of Nora Ephron deserves some serious credit - yes, we admit it. We are jealous! Her financially struggling character is also a good inspiration for this month's bb theme of Essential Beauty Buys. After all, it is best to stick to the essentials when you are feeling a little cash strapped. These are our top picks for Lena...
Lena is a little daring (have you seen her tattoos?!) so we bet she'd love a bit of coloured eyeliner. Our current pick is the Bourjois Smoky Pencil, which comes in plenty of bright shades. A few lucky bb members received the Dark Purple 72 shade in this month's box, which adds a lovely violet pop to peepers, similar to Lena's look above!
To ace the basics of any look, you've got to start with a clean and clear canvas. Enter stage right, a great cleanser. Of course, it is best to pick one which doesn't strip the skin of natural oils, especially considering how dry your skin can potentially become during winter anyway! Also, when you wash your face with a cleanser that makes it feel dry and tight, your skin is more likely to produce excess sebum as a result - which means oilier skin in the long run. Look for a cleanser that is kind to your face; the Plunkett's Nutri-Synergy Sensitive Skin Cleanser has a milky formula which leaves skin soft and smooth without stripping it of moisture.
Lena likes to keep her red carpet beauty looks fairly simple, which is a great option if you choose to wear a standout dress like her metallic version above. Even if you don't want to accentuate your eyes, it is a good idea to still use a great quality, lengthening mascara. Almay Get Up & Grow Mascara not only increases the length of your lashes appearance-wise, but also contains conditioning ingredients that promote anti-breakage. Adding a slight depth of colour and a little length to your lashes with a natural looking mascara like Almay's won't overpower your look, but instead will make you look more awake, polished and put together. A true beauty essential!
Do you love Lena too? We implore you to watch one episode of the show and not relate to one of issues that the girls are facing - even my Mum found it engaging! Let us know! - Lauren
