Catching up with foodie favourite and All Star MasterChef contestant Hayden Quinn is comparative to feasting on your favourite pasta dish - there is never a bad time to do so! But seeing as our belloboxes are getting ready to be sent out again (how fast 3 months goes!) we thought it was particularly good timing to hear more from Hayden now, including his grooming picks and his top recipe tip for the new spring season!
You've become well known and loved by foodies everywhere for your laidback and and friendly personality on MasterChef. What inspired you to audition for the show?
I think the main thing that made me audition and throw my name in the hat was a sense of adventure and of course a big love of food. And I’m sure, like a lot of people, when I watched the show I thought to myself; ‘I could do that!’
Since immersing yourself in food culture, is there one chef whose cooking has inspired you the most?
Through my whole life my mum has been probably the most influential person in developing the love of food that I have today. She is an amazing cook who used to work in the food industry but is now more into trying to out do me!
Other than Mum, Jamie Oliver has to be the one guy to look up to. His laid back approachable food is really relevant to today’s fast paced society. My goal, like Jamie's, is to make food accessable to all. It’s really not that hard!!!
You've been writing your eBook series, "Hayden Cooks". How different is writing about food to actually cooking in the moment?
The way do it is I write my recipes from experiences I have had. Most of the food in there is either something I have cooked before or something that I have eaten and then given my own spin on. So the first thing I do is draft up a recipe on pen and paper, research the ingredients and then go out an buy the stuff, cook the dish and while I am cooking I am making notes and changes to the draft. This then gets changed and edited and then I go back and have another go. So it is sort of like writing, cooking, editing, and most of the time, taking photos - all at the same time!!
We are so excited that it’s finally spring (we Melbournites aren’t as often blessed with beautiful mild weather like Sydney-siders!) If you had to pick one recipe, that’s perfect for the new spring season, what would it be?
Oh that would have to be my king fish ceviche in Hayden Cooks Summer. Super fresh, very summery and the dish tells the story of my time in the Caribbean.
You obviously live a very active and healthy lifestyle having grown up by the beach with a love of surfing as well working as a Professional Lifeguard. Plus, you are part of the Ten Sports commentary team! What are the others ways that you like to stay active and how important is this kind of lifestyle to you?
I think life for me is about balance, its about doing all the things you love ad making the most of every day. For me, I have just come off the back of about 2 months overseas (New York, India, New Zealand) and that’s when it gets hard to be active sometimes, but I think the best way to get active OS is to walk or ride instead of taking the Subway, or bus, or rickshaw. That way not only do you get a little exercise in between food stops, it also slows you down and allows you to take a lot more of the country in.
But now I am back home I will be back surfing, doing yoga in the mornings, playing touch with the lads and throwing the body around the back yard gym.
Here at bellabox and bellobox, on top of helping our readers and members to feel good, we are all about beauty and grooming, to help them look good too! What is your typical everyday grooming routine?
I am a shower freak, I have to shower at least two times a day! haha! As for the routine, I use Dr Bronner’s Castile Soap with a loooooofer, some gentle face wash, a good face moisturiser with SPF15 and if my body is really dry (which happens a lot being on and off planes) I use bio oil on my arms, shoulders and legs etc. As for hair, not much happens there as you may have noticed! I generally get my hair trimmed by a mate who has a studio in DY and then wash it with what ever my sisters have in the shower.
I never shave. Clippers only!!
You've travelled extensively - which destination first comes to mind as one of your favourites? And what's the most recent stamp in your passport?
Has to be NYC, I love the place. I lived in NJ for a while in 2005, have heaps of mates there and have been 7 times now, the last of which was last month, and I have a bit of a clip coming out soon.
