Do you like to listen to music while you get ready? I certainly do. It started off as a way to get into the spirit for night out (Cue: Beyonce, Rihanna, Florence and The Machine) but quickly turned into part of my daily ritual.
Now, every morning when I wake up and jump in the shower, I'll have one of many playlists going in the background. But I think all of this musicality in the bathroom has turned my beauty routine into a choreographed dance! Case in point - when applying my mascara, LMFAO always immediately start up in my head: 'Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle. Yeah! Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle. Yeah!' OK, before you judge me, I ask you this- what better way is there to remember that by wiggling your wand right in at the roots of your lashes your mascara will add extra oomph and volume? The answer. None! And it sure makes Monday mornings a lot brighter to have a little boogie whilst getting ready!
Here are my other top 6 musically inspired, mood boosting beauty moves to bust out next time you're getting dolled up, whether it's to go and party, or simply for the office!
This super catchy tune from '84 isn't only good for a getting dancy or for a giggle (either from George's dancing and huge gold hoop earrings, or from the orange mocha frapachino scene in Zoolander. Take your pick!) It's also a great motto for styling your peepers if you are feeling a little tired. To wake up tired eyes before walking our the door, reach for a light and shimmery shadow. By applying it to your lashline and inner corners of the eye, you'll open up the eye area a whole lot wider, making you look more alert and awake. Plus, shimmery shadows reflect the light, giving you a brighter looking face (ace for if you are a little 'under the weather'. Or just plain hungover) Try Napoleon Perdis Créme de la Créme Eyeshadow if you love creamy shadows or Glamorous Minerals Mineral Shimmer Eye Dust for a long-lasting powder finish.
FOR THE NAILS...
Beyonce - To The Left
Who doesn't love a good break-up tune? No one does scorned woman turned empowered lady like Bey. Her 'To the left' lyrics are also a good one for promoting the growth of healthy tallons (whether you want to use them to stratch his eyes out or not! I recommend not - your nails will be far too pretty for that sort of behaviour) When filing nails, many make the mistake of swiping back and forth across the tips. This can cause nails to break slightly, which might not be evident at the time, but 3 days into your mani, when cracks or peeling appear out of the blue, you can thank your filing method. Instead, file nails one way only, not back and forth. It's easy - just think 'To the left, to the left' and your nails will love you for it. Once you've filed yours to perfection, try a slick of Baby Blue to commemorate Bey's little one! Oh, and it's a hot nail trend for spring. I love Mode Nail Enamel in Hook Me Up.
FOR THE SKIN...
MC HAMMER - Can't Touch This
Apart from bringing the running man dance into mainstream pop-cultre, MC's tune also offers sound skincare advice. Don't touch your face! Of course, touch it with clean fingers whilst getting ready in the morning, but try to keep your hands off during the day. Your fingers can spread oils onto the skin which promotes bacteria and pimples - no fun! And if you already have a spot? Try to leave it alone. Once you've covered it up with a quality concealer, dust a little powder on top to set your makeup in place. Try Savoir Faire Concealer and Finishing Powder in one. At night, try to refrain from popping and picking, as tempting as this may be. Instead, dab on a spot reducing cream on before bed, I love Bioderma's Sebium AKN cream which purifys and unclogs skin without drying thanks to its moisturising properties.
FOR THE LIPS...
The Doors - Love Me Two Times
While Jim Morrison wasn't singing about his love of lipstick, doing a double take with your lip colour of choice is a good move. If you steer clear of lipstick for fear of having to continually reapply, try this trick to make it last a whole lot longer. After lining your lips, apply your lipstick once, painting it on with a brush for precision and concentrated colour build up. Then grab a tissue and blot before repeating the whole process. This little trick really works and will give your lip colour much longer wear - perfect for special events like weddings or the races. My top lip colour pick for spring? Savoir Faire's Showgirl in their Mini Lipstick range - plus, it's only $7.50. Score!
FOR THE BASE...
Florence and the Machine - Shake It Out
Not only does she know how to draw a crowd to the d-floor, Flo also knows that shaking or tapping out excess product on your makeup brush before applying is the key to perfect powder application - she must, considering her stunning translucent complexion! Rather than blowing on your makeup brushes, shake or tap off the excess powder it's accumulated after you've swished it around your compact. This way, your base won't look too heavy/shiney/blushed (depending on the powder product in question) My fave powder pick right now? The Inika Mineral Illuminisor which is ideal to dust over your foundation to set it in place and give it an extra touch of shimmer. I use the e.l.f Essential Total Face Brush to swipe mine on - a steal at just $3.99!
So, what song will inspire your beauty routine? Do you like getting a little dancy while primping everyday? My current feel-good tunes come courtesy of Hall and Oates - which songs make you feel amazing? After all, feeling good and looking good go hand in hand! Embrace the beauty boogie! - Lauren
