Grease is the word, and you'll get a chance to see it on stage again with John Frost's production of the hit musical continuing its successful tour around Australia! The Pink Ladies and the T-Birds are hitting the road, and we can't wait to watch Sandy and Danny fall in love again.
Gretel Scarlett stars as Sandy, and we took a moment to find out what it's like to be the star of such an iconic musical. Plus of course we needed to know all her beauty secrets! Gretel has previously appeared in Mamma Mia! and Wicked, after studying at the Western Australia Academy Of Performing Arts. Now she's taking on her biggest challenge yet, opposite Rob Mills as Danny in Grease.
We’re so excited to see Grease hit the road and travel around Australia – what has been the highlight of playing Sandy so far? The highlight for me has been performing to incredible party crowds across Australia. I, as Sandy, have the opportunity to sing 'Hopelessly Devoted to You' - the song that most audience members love to belt out from their seats. It's almost like being at a rock concert when I can hear them singing back with me! It's magical!
There are some pretty incredible costumes in Grease. Which one of Sandy’s outfits is your favourite? I love my 'Summer Nights' day outfit - the yellow seamed bodice with a full circular waisted skirt! I feel like Sandy the minute I put it on.
How do you stay healthy and energised when you’re performing night after night? I eat very well and always make sure I have 3 meals a days, packed with lots of veggies and grains, and fill my day with snacks in between. I like to make slow energy releasing snacks so that my body never feels lack lustre. I make my own vegan nut balls, with nuts, coconut oil, agave and goji berries, and have a stash of organic dried fruit bars in my dressing room. I have a big vitamin regime, drink green smoothies and barley grass supplements. I don't go to the gym, because my mind doesn't enjoy it. The show keeps me reasonably fit, but if not, I love to go for a walk, do some pilates or ashtanga yoga. Energy wise, I make sure I get my down time. Sleep!
What elements of 1950s style and beauty do you love most? Have you incorporated any into your own everyday look? I adore the waisted full circular skirts. They are so feminine! I actually really enjoy wearing skirts and dresses, so it's something I've continued to do, even since being with the show.
Stage makeup can be very heavy – what are your tips for removing it at the end of the day and keeping your skin in good condition? My skin care regime is based on 'less is more'. I've done the 5 step extensive skin care solutions and my face is destroyed by over washing and cleansing. Post show, I use my Dermablend makeup remover which is specifically for my makeup. Then I wash with a light soap (Cetaphil sensitive skin) and use a little Organic Baby moisturiser. If it can soothe a newborns skin from heat and nappy rash, it has to be ok for our most sensitive skin.
What are your top three beauty products that you can’t live without?
I love my Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat Radiant Touch, my Benefit 'They're Real' Mascara and my new Calvin Klein 'Euphoria Forbidden' perfume.
How do you wind down after a big show?
I usually head straight home, have some food, a cup of tea, hop straight into bed and watch whatever I have missed out on or continue the TV series I am watching! I don't have too much trouble winding down after the show. My body is generally ready for bed.
