Night is not only when your mind and body recuperate and rest, it's also when your skin has a chance to breathe, restore and heel - depending on the ailment your face, well, faces.
Give your skin the best start to a happy morning by treating it the night before. Here are our top skin tips, perfect for cosying up with in winter...
Always cleanse before bed
Cleansing before bed is very important and the best way to get your beauty sleep off to a good start. Keeping a layer of old makeup, oils, and daily grime on your face is no way to help you get your beauty sleep. Instead, make a pact to remove your makeup and everything else before hitting the pillow each night. If you find it hard cleansing before bed, keep a few 'cheats' products by your bed to make it easier. The Avene Miceller Lotion 3 in 1 is a great option. Removing every trace of makeup without rinsing, this water-like cleanser soothes and refreshes skin. Another great option is the Bioderma Crealine H2o. Simply swipe over face with a cotton pad to cleanse - no rinsing required!
Another great option for can't-be-bothered-cleansing is face wipes. Pick a pack that is kind to sensitive skin, with wipes that are soft and less 'stiff' so they don't drag across the skin. We love Simple Kind to Skin Cleansing Wipes, which also tone as they cleanse. You can also try cult fave WOTNOT wipes, which are intensely nourishing with almond oil.
Make friends with a mask
Masks are one of my favourite beauty products because they are specifically designed to help certain skin ailments and boost your regular routine. Masks are best used a couple of nights a week to get the full benefit of the more concentrated and powerful ingredients within. Different masks, for different results are (you guessed it!) very different in texture and use. For example, a mask for oily skin/acne will most likely be a clay-based mask, as clay absorbs and 'pulls' excess sebum out of the skin when it dries. Great clay-based masks to try for yourself are the Cellilux Glacial Mineral Gel Mask and the A'Kin Kaolin Clay & Lemongrass Express Purifying Face Mask. Simply apply the mask, leave for 20 minutes until dry and wash off with a warm cloth.
Lastly, a great species of mask is the brightening version. These masks are ace for reducing signs of pigmentation and evening out skin tone. Try the emerginC Vitamin C and Retinol Mask which contains potent concentrations of vitamin C, lemon juice, retinol and green tea, to remove dead skin cells and improves skin tone and texture.
Don't forget your body
Finally, don't forget the skin on your bod when it comes to beauty sleep. Chilly winter mornings make it easy to skip the step of moisturising limbs when we are scrambling to locate a pair of jeans or tights to slip into. But you can make up for it before bed - rather than reaching for your regular moisturiser, switch to a body oil instead. And think outside the box. Try using a nourishing oil, like my all time fave Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse to shave with, instead of a skin-stripping gel. Not only will you get a closer shave, your legs will stay soft and smooth thanks to macadamia, hazelnut and camellia oils.
Or, if you are a soap girl through-and-through, pick a moisturising bar. We love the moisturising Sweet Almond Oil, Cocoa Butter and a delicate fragrant finish of Circa Home Soaps. Free from sulphates, PEGs, parabens and mineral oils, they'll keep skin happy as well as pepping up your senses with a stunning scent. My pick? Vanilla & Cocoa. Perfect for a winter bath before bed!
I don't know about you, but I'm feeling a little sleepy now! How do you try to help your beauty sleep? Do you have a nightly skincare routine?
