Shimmering beauty products might remind you of an earlier time. For me, it's 1997 and the glitter hair gel I'd scrape through my hair in order to get the tightest, most face lifting high pony tail of all time. Why that was super important as a 10 year old is beyond me! However, to let the mistakes of beauty-past stop you from exploring the new era of shimmering prods would be a shame - there are some stunning picks out there, ace for achieving the most simple and stylish of shimmers. Here's how...
Rather than the glitter body creams that you may or may not have lathered on for a big night out at the disco in years gone by, these days body shimmers are more about plant based oil products that nourish the skin for a more natural glow, a la Eva. My new fave body oil is the amazing Nuxe. Containing macadamia, hazelnut and camellia oils, it not only intensely nourishes skin, but also sinks in fast, leaving a stunning yet subtle (and importantly non-sticky) sheen behind. Plus, it is lightly scented, so you can use it in place of your perfume too.
A little shimmer added to the right plains of your face can instantly lift your complexion - even if you've had less than the usual required amount of sleep or water, and there are two shimmering products I'd recommend for your base, no matter your age or skin type.
Firstly, I can never go past a great mineral or powder illuminisor, like the Inika Mineral Illuminisor. These subtle, shimmery products are perfect for adding a touch of glimmer and brightness to your complexion, without your base veering into the too glowy, or even the too oily category. The powder formula works a treat at locking down your foundation and concealer, whilst adding a little 'mattification' to your base sans that retro feel. Simply dust ever so lightly over your T-zone, after you've applied your regular base prods with a big, soft brush.
The second shimmery product I love is a creamy illuminator. Unlike the powder formula, a creamy version is great for adding obvious definition to specific areas of your face, such as your cheek bones and up towards your temples, your brow bones, the bridge of your nose and your cupids bow (just above your top lip). A shimmery pale tone, like half of the Bloom Cream Blush Duo is perfect for this. Apply with your finger tips, to help warm the product, for a well blended finish.
Adding a touch of shimmer to your look is easiest with the eyes. But why not try out a shimmery liner, rather than an eyeshadow for a striking yet subtle vibe? I'm loving the Eye of Horus Bronze Amulet Goddess Pencil, found in some of the Feb bb boxes this month. The bronze shade is super flattering, and looks lovely when drawn along the top lashes and a little of the lower, outer lashes and smudged for a 'lived in' feel. If you're after something a little more daring, give a liquid glitter liner a go. TheBloom Glitter Eyeliner looks lovely painted on in a fine line above lashes - try it over the top of your regular black winged liner for a glam and girly party look.
Like your eyes, here is where a touch of shimmer can also be a little fun, without looking OTT! We love the new highly pigmented glitter shades from the Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure range, which can brighten up your digits in just a few sweeps. For a more classic shimmer look, try the gold toned 'Golden Rule' or the charcoal 'Shoot the Moon' (as seen on Emily below). A little more daring? We love the oceanic tones of 'Mermaids Tail'.
And there you have it. Easy, simple and classic ways to master shimmer for an oh so now beauty look, not at all reminiscent of disco days. Do you use any of these products yourself? What is your fave way to add a little shimmer to your beauty look? Let me know! - Lauren
