It's that time of year - boot camp time. As the weather starts to get warmer, eager excerisers come out in the wee hours of the morning and get worked hard army-style. If you are a fan of boot camp, I give you full permission to feel smug thanks to your willpower and determination to push yourself hard for great results! However, if like me, you are terrified at the proposition of a Biggest Loser style Commando whipping your butt into shape, I am here to offer you a little smug satisfaction of your own - all without having to leave your bathroom! This month we give you the beauty boot camp rundown for skin, hair and legs (no squats required!)
This week we tackle your skin to get it in tip top shape for summer, now!
First, you need to start with a great cleanser. Reach for one that controls the sebum in your skin. When you overproduce sebum, or when you don't control it by cleansing daily, your pores are more likely to get clogged up, which results in unfriendly blackheads and of course, pimples. However, it is also important not to strip the skin of its natural oils either, as this can have the opposite effect of making your skin work overtime to produce extra oils as a response mechanism. Makeup wearers also need to make sure to wash properly, morning and night, as not taking off your handiwork can also result in extra blockages in the pores, particularly around the t-zone (forehead, around the nose and the chin) In turn, this means you may need more makeup to cover up blemishes, and a vicious cycle in created - nooo!
To combat all these nasty things, we recommend the Bioderma Sebium Foaming Gel. This reputable cleanser contains Zinc Gluconate and Copper Sulfate to purify your skin - these natural ingredients also give the formula its blue colour. Made for both sensitive and oily skin, this cleanser is also ideal for acne prone skin. For best results try two reps a day - massage into damp skin, before rinsing for thoroughly cleansed skin!
Next you need to polish or exfoliate the skin. I am a huge fan of polishing products that work due to their formulations, rather than their textures. Often, they'll contain enzymes that break down dead skin cells and pore blockages, rather than scrubbing them away with overly rough components.
The Lancôme Visionnaire Polishing Cream is exactly one of these products. The cream is formulated in the same way that the iconic Visionnaire serum is, containing a revolutionary little molecule (called ER 2412, to be specific) that penetrates deep into the epidermal structure of the skin to improve wrinkles, smooth tone and texture, and encourage pigmentary and vascular evenness. But this cream also houses an ingredient called Sodium Hyaluronate, to hydrate the skin too, so you can reap the benefits of refining and polishing, whilst getting your daily dose of moisturisation too. When purchased full-size, this cream also comes with a handy, double-sided little paddle that can be used to exfoliate (with the grainy side) and polish (with the smooth and rounded side) making your skincare routine a whole lot more fun thanks to clever gadgetrey!
Still on refining, sometimes, you need a little extra blemish fighting in your life thanks to exfoliation, even if you don't suffer from acne. Example: it's that time of the month and hormones have wrought havock on your face (for me, it's my chin) Look for a creamy spot correcting cream. These creams usually contain exfoliating agents that work to refine skin texture and unclog pores. Unlike 'manual' exfoliants such as scrubs, these types of exfoliating products use hard working ingredients to do it all for you.
We love the Bioderma Sebium AKN cream because it does all this and can be worn underneath your makeup! This way you can actively kill a blemish whilst covering it up with makeup at the same time, unlike traditional pimple creams that sit on top of the skin, so you can only really wear them to bed!
If you love a grainy exfoliant to use all over the face, look for one that is gentle - you don't want to add any trauma with a scrub that is too rough! Try the Comvita Brightening Facial Exfoliant, which contains sandy components, but won't drag on delicate skin. It also contains olive leaf extract to brighten your complexion - perfect for the new season!
Toning isn't just for biceps! It's another step in the skincare routine that is often overlooked, or when done, does more damage to skin than good. You know that stinging feeling you get when swiping on your toner? That's bad! Your skin should never feel tight or stinging. If it does, you've probably stripped it of all its natural oils - never a good thing. Unless you have very oily skin, look for a toning product that doesn't contain any alcohol, as chances are this will be harsh and drying on your lovely face. Try the Kosmea Hydrating Rosewater Mist instead. This natural spray contains rose water to keep skin hydrated and soothed. It can also be used to set makeup in place and as a refreshing facial mist as a mid-afternoon pick me up in the warmer weather.
MOISTURISE AND HYDRATE
We all know it is important to hydrate after a work out, but it is just as important to keep your face hydrated with moisturising products too. When it comes to moisturising, it is often good to reserve space in your beauty bag for a day formulation and night one too. This way you can tailor your moisturising products to suit your skincare needs from AM to PM - and these needs can vary dramatically. During the day, it is important to look for formulations containing an SPF for sun protection and formulations that are light, so they sink into skin fast prior to makeup application. Of course, bb's top moisturising picks for day are tinted moisturisers, which are great for light coverage (perfect for spring and summer) and ace for adding a touch of colour to your face when full foundation isn't called for/you don't have the time to apply it! We love True Solutions All Day Moisture SPF 30+ Tinted Cream which combines sun protection, hydrating properties and a subtle, soft summer glow.
But why wear a moisturiser with sun protection and colour to bed? For night time, look for thicker formulations containing anti-ageing properties, like the Gatineau Aquamemory Moisture Replenish Cream. This moisturiser brings the ideal moisture balance back to skin with Sea Fennel, to provide deep down hydration and Vitamin E to protect skin against free radical damage - and all this can be done while you sleep! Too easy.
Do you have a skincare routine in place for spring? Remember to switch it up for warmer weather and get a solid routine into place now for skin the scream SPRING'S HERE! Remember, uping your excersise routine, whether with boot camp or not, will also promote a great skin glow that can't be faked! - Lauren
