What is it?: Toning and hydrating sprays are designed to keep your skin's pH levels balanced (the toning bit) and of course hydrated and refreshed. The hydration bit is pretty self-explanatory but what about the pH part?
You see, our skin is naturally designed to fight infection and environmental stresses - it's our largest organ and comes into contact with everything we do (even the things we can't see) and its ability to do so is dependent on its pH level. This level refers to how acidic or alkaline it is. The scale goes from 1-14 - 1 being the most acidic and 14 being the most alkaline. It makes sense then, that 7 is considered a neutral reading, and where you want your skin to be.
Your skin's natural characteristics, like creating sebum will be the first things to affect your pH levels. Sebum is more than just shine producing 'oil'! To get technical, it's a mixture of lactic and amino acids (from your sweat). These natural characteristics should generally leave your skin's pH levels relatively neutral, or pretty close to it. But lots of things can affect this level! Our lifestyle choices (including drinking, and smoking), aging, diet, sun exposure, and just everything our skin comes in contact with in general can cause more acidity in your skin, which effects how your skin protects itself.
Enter toners. They'll help to bring your skin back towards the neutral zone, especially after cleansing (which can strip the skin of it's natural oils along with dirt and grime). The Alexami Hydrating Toning Mist is enhanced with active botanicals and antioxidants like Aloe Vera, White Tea, Chamomile, and Elderberries to do so. Plus, it's 97% certified organic
Packaging: The Alexami Mist comes in a cute 60ml spray bottle - a lovely citrus green to be exact. I LOVE the size! Why? It's perfect for taking on the plane, and a hydrating toner is my number one must have when flying. It is amazing at rehydrating and keeping skin feeling normal - and me feeling human - after 10+ hrs in the sky.
The bottle also informs me the contents are not tested on animals, certified by the Organic Food Chain Australia and proudly Australian made. Tick, tick, and tick!
Texture/Application: This isn't my first time around the toning/hydrating mist block, so I knew how to apply. Most importantly, don't hold the spray bottle too close to your face. This will result in shock at the speed and velocity at which the spray hits you in the face! Not pleasant. Also, try spraying into the air first, so you get an idea of how 'spritz-y' it is.
After lightly spraying it over my face after cleansing, fresh from the shower, my senses love it more than my skin. Then fresh citrus scent is super invigorating and a good way to get my butt into gear at 6.10am - 'no time for drowsing whilst primping!' it not so much screams, but softly whispers at it lovingly caresses my complexion with it's mist. What a dermal delight! I also wait around 15 minutes before moisturising (my new trick - but more on that another time), and when it's time to slather up with my daily creams, my skin isn't crying out for moisture or feeling tight. So far, so good.
In the name of this review, I also take the Alexami Mist to work and spritz throughout the day, over the top of my makeup, et all. It not only refreshes my face, it also adds a touch of moisture to my slightly dry base thanks to the extreme air-con summer necessitates at bbHQ, creating dewy, not dry, skin.
Verdict: I've fallen pretty hard for this mist, and must admit, my very, very bad 'no-share' traits have been brought to the fore. It's hot and everyone wants a spritz, but I want to keep my little green bottle of Alexami all to myself! If you haven't already got a toning mist in your life, now (being summer) is the perfect time. Don't forget, you can keep yours in the fridge for a mega-refreshing feel. You can also use it as a prop for selfies!
