Last week, we were lucky enough to get the opportunity to detox with Urban Remedy and their 5 days juice cleanse. How did we go? Read on to find out...
What is it: Urban Remedy is a healthy juice cleansing program designed to detox and renew your body and tailored to suit your lifestyle and diet. It involves replacing all solid foods for 1, 3 or 5 days with a daily series of six super nutritious juices that are delivered directly to you. Their cleansing programs come in three different levels, which means you can choose the cleanse that's most suited to your goals, lifestyle and diet.
So, why do it? Cleansing can reduce the level of toxins in your body and can assist you to kick-start a new healthy lifestyle, maintain your equilibrium, lose weight, get more energy and generally feel better. Especially good to prepare for summer, or to give your bod a break from coffee, sugar, unhealthy carbs, too much red meat etc.
We trialled the spring summer cleanse menu, which is made up of 4 juices and 2 smoothies for each day. They come numbered, so you know which order to have them in. And they aren't designed to starve you - the 3-day cleanse contains the nutrients from over 12kgs of fruit and vegetables. That's the equivalent of 80 apples! We chose the 5 day, level one cleanse. It's good for a longer cleanse, but perfect if you have never done a juice cleanser before either - it eases your body into it, rather than the level 3, for example, which is better for those more accustomed to detoxing.
Day 1 - Lauren: We officially kick off day one of our cleanse at 9am. Our juices have arrived the day before (2 days worth, which equals 12 juices - 6 per day) and we've packaged our daily fill into the cute little cooler bags that come with the cleanse. Before your first juice, you're directed to drink a glass of warm water with some lemon to get your detoxing under way, first thing.
The first juice of the day is the 'Energising smoothie'. It's a green colour, but contains not-so-scarey ingredients like banana, mango, chia, goji and water. The green colour comes from the spinach in the juice, but it tastes mostly like banana - yum! It's also super thick, so I find myself full once I've finished it. You're also directed to drink a big glass of water with each juice, which certainly fills you up! By the time 11am rolls around, I'm not 'hungry' but it's juice 2's turn. This is the 'Metabolism booster' juice - it contains lemon, cayenne (yep, that's a kind of pepper), stevia (a natural sweetening ingredient) and water. It actually tastes good, despite my reservations. Kind of like a very refreshing lemonaid, sans bubbles, and with a little kick as an aftertaste. Still, I drink this one fast.
As the day goes by, I have juice 3 at 1pm, and juice 4 at 5pm and start to get a little 'hungry'. I'm not starving per se, and certainly feel full of liquid, but am missing the chewing of actual food, and the usual routine of deciding what to have for dinner. I got to bed pretty early and fall asleep right away, but wake up at 4am and struggle to get back to sleep, so I feel a little tired when I wake up for day 2...
Day 2 - Vanessa: I wake up this morning relatively sprightly despite feeling hungry. This was the first morning in a very long time that I cleaned the entire house well before I would normally wake up. Big tick. The morning started off really well. I love the first 3 juices so they were incredibly easy to digest. Juice 2, the 'Metabolism booster' was by far my favourite. I am all for tangy lemon.
By lunch I was craving solid food, however was determined to soldier on despite wanting to hook into a giant hamburger or block of chocolate. Juice 4 or my 3pm 'meal', is another lemon version, this time with lime and ginger added. This juice is really refreshing and actually feels like it is doing good for your body. The perfect boost into the afternoon. Juice 5 the 'Zingy uplifter' didn’t go down as well as the others for me, and definitely didn’t feel uplifted upon consumption. I am not a huge fan of carrot juice so this one was the biggest challenge. After hesitantly finishing Juice 5, I headed to yoga. I noticed I was much more disciplined in class, not as distracted or thinking about what needed to be done at work the next day. By the time I went to bed, I was full. I consumed Juice 6 the 'Calming smoothie' which contains banana, almonds, chia, cacao (a healthier form of cocoa) and water 2 hours before going to sleep. This one is 'desert', and feels like a healthier version of a choccie milkshake. Delicious! Doing better than I thought.
Day 3 - Lauren: As day 3 rolls around, I'll admit, I'm struggling. I don't have much energy and my stomach feels a bit funny. But once I have juice 1 and 2, I start to feel a lot better. I also really start to look forward to juice 3 (1pm's 'meal') each day - the 'Digestion enhancer'. I really like it. It's got mint, pineapple and apple inside, and kind of (kiiiiiiind of) has a mojito sort of vibe to it.
After work, I head to the nearest shopping center to make the most of a loyalty sale at one of my most loved stores to grab a few basic tees. Of course, I walk out with 5 picture frames in tow (#shoppingadiction) which are quite heavy. On the walk to the car, dragging along my shopping bags, I take a call from my mum. The effort of walking to the car, trying to field mum-questions, and carrying heavy sale spoils takes it's toll and I feel exhausted once I'm driving home. Though, I'm very happy with myself at avoiding the food court and my fave rice paper rolls at all costs, and gulp down the final juice (#6) of the day on the way home. Before bed I'm excited/happy/relieved that I'm nearly on the downhill slope to the end of the cleanse - only two more days to go!
Day 4 - Vanessa: I wake up this morning and go for my morning run. Note: my tummy is actually looking much more defined, so I chose my crop top to bask in my new body loving glory for the workout! Feeling a little lethargic along the way, which isn’t normal, have to cut the run short and make sure I stop along the way for water. I head home for breakfast - Juice 1 and immediately feel better. Today is a Saturday, so no work. I chose to keep myself away from temptations so having a spring-cleaning marathon. My productivity is in overdrive. My fiancé and my house are both loving me right now.
Not having those “cravings” that I experienced on day 1-3 and the mild headaches have gone. I am much more aware of what I am putting in my body so see myself planning my first meal of day six. Surprisingly it didn’t contain bacon or read “big brekkie” in my mind menu. I got through the day fine, however it wasn’t until I caught up with a girlfriend that I started desiring “what she was having”. Despite wanting to throw it all in for a sip of her espresso martini, I didn’t and I thanked myself for being so disciplined. I went to bed refreshed, knowing I was doing good for my body. Feeling inspired. One day left. I can do this and I am really happy with the results.
Day 5 - Lauren: Finally, day 5 is here! I've never been so excited about food. But that excitement is equally matched with my enthusiasm for finishing the cleanse with pride. I can't believe I've done it.
However, I do slip off the wagon right at the end... instead of my final juice for the day, I go out for dinner and have a pasta. I instantly feel unwell! I vow to eat a little lighter than my pre-cleanse diet for the next week, and happily, I follow through on this self-promise. Turns out, this cleanse has been able to change my habits!
Verdict: While it was hard (harder than we thought) we would recommend it to break your bad habits. If you can't survive without your daily coffee, or if you are addicted to sugar (be honest!) this cleanse will help you to rip the bandaid off and really go cold turkey, which I personally think is the only way to go. The idea and guilt of 'cheating' is a big mental barrier when considering jumping off the wagon! It's more of a test to yourself, and a commitment to your will to do something that'll really shake up your relationship with food and what you put into your body everyday. It will make you reconsider eating for the sake of eating, and appreciate that food is really to fuel your body (as well as to enjoy and treat yourself with, but from time to time... not every meal!)
While I've since had pizza post-cleanse, I've managed to avoid a coffee a day, as I find I don't really need it anymore. I've naturally gravitated towards fresher foods (pizza aside) and have enjoyed requesting delish chicken, pumpkin and quinoa salads and the like when my bf asks what should be on the menu for dinner. However, I haven't had nearly as many fresh juices as I usually would - I think I'm juiced out for a while!
