Style Sunday is back for another week! This time we decode the best 3 beauty looks to rock with a collared shirt. Read on for our top 3 tips to work with one of this season's hottest pieces...
#1 is for those days when you are looking for a touch of beauty inspiration to add to your look. #2 is for when you want to go one step further to complement your beauty choices with the fashion in question, and #3 is for when you want to do a 'look' - you know, the one that you save extra time for when getting ready because you want everything to look juuuust right! Will you choose just one beauty element or all three?
#1 The top knot
Once the forté of ballet dancers only, the top knot has cemented itself as a beauty staple in many girls' hair repertoires! Trying a top knot when you are going for the buttoned up look has multiple beauty benefits. Number one: When there is a bit 'going on' around your neckline, it is always a good idea to keep your hair back, so as not to swamp your features. Number two: A top knot is ridiculously cute. Number three: A messy top knot counteracts the structured feel of a buttoned up collar, balancing out the 'soft' and 'harsh' elements of the look. Number four: refer back numbers one, two and three!
Top knots don't have to be perfect - in fact it is better to keep them a little messy - and they certainly don't have to be plain! Why not add a braid at the back of your head before forming your bun? Or try plaiting your pony tail into a fish braid for a more textured bun? Even adding a bow, or keeping your fringe out, changes the entire look of a top knot and makes it a little more individual.
Product wise, we recommend using twistbands to secure your ponytail when you begin to create your perfect top knot. As they stretch to fit around even the thickest of hair, twistbands are more comfortable than thinner, 'tighter' hair ties. Don't be afraid of their thick appearance- they are very malleable and bobby pins slide right past and around them whilst you are pinning up sections of hair. Plus, they are more comfortable leaving you less likely to get a midday 'bun headache'!
#2 Luminous skin
With your hair back and your decolletage covered up, the focus will all be on your face. When this is the case it is best to keep your complexion as bright and clear as you can (or at least make it appear that way!) To get skin in optimum condition it all starts with cleansing and moisturising every day as well as using a great serum that works to brighten dark spots and pigmentation. We are big fans of the Comvita Brightening Facial Serum that is delicate but high performance. Containing olive leaf extract - with 5 times the amount of antioxidant activity than vitamin C - it quickly penetrates skin to enhance luminosity.
Once you've put in the hard yards with a stellar skincare routine it is time to play up your great skin with a brightening illuminator. We love the MeMeMe Beat the Blues Illuminator which blends easily with its liquid formula and is great to highlight eyes and cheeks. Blend high into your cheek bones, along the bridge of your nose, and just above your eyes on the brow bone for stunning accentuation. Otherwise, mix with your foundation for an all over glow - just be careful when applying as you don't want any pesky makeup marks to mar the collar of your shirt!
#3 Red lips
There are lots of occasions that call for a red lip - a black tie event. A day at the races. Your birthday. A hot date. A Friday- just because it's a Friday. In fact, who am I kidding? A red lip is like a great pair of jeans - you can wear them anywhere... Even your cousins wedding if you've got the right shoes on! But when you are wearing a collared shirt, done up right to the top, as well as rocking a cute top knot, plus amazingly radiant skin, a red lip will complete you look like nothing else can! (Case in point: the super cute girl with glasses on below!)
To achieve a great red lip there are plenty of options available. You can go for a matte lipstick, or one with a shine. You can choose a blue based red if you have paler skin or an orange based red if you have olive skin (for a full rundown check out Lucy's article, all about red lipstick and how to choose one that is just right for you!)
But my choice for a great long-lasting red would have to come from a really pigmented lip tint. OCC Lip Tars have so much pigment, it is actually a shock to see the huge burst of colour come out of the tube when you first use it! This means you only need the smallest amount and should apply with a lip brush, so as not to make a mess. The greatest thing about these tints is that they last for at least 3 drinks, an entree, main and dessert (plus a sneaky cocktail) before you need to even think about touching up*! Plus Lauren Conrad has declared herself a fan of these little tubes of lip tint heaven. Cherry. On. Top. My favorite tint is the NSFW colour, for the perfect red.
