Sometimes you just need to watch trash TV. Who does it better than anyone else? America of course. They’re not the sorts of show that have you sitting on the edge of your seat, but they’re good to have on while you’re doing other things. Personally I like to have it on when I’m cooking and ironing, but… also when I’m painting my nails, and doing my hair, and doing Pilates. Basically I watch a lot more TV than I should so I’m an expert.
If you’re aspiring to be a couch potato like myself, here are my picks for the top trash shows in honour of American Beauty month at bellabox.
America’s Next Top Model.
Pretty simple, a bunch of wanna-be models do regular photoshoots and challenges relating to modelling (or so they say), in order to win a contract with some company and a few ad campaigns. There’s an Australian version as well, but it’s just not as funny. I think they intentionally sleep deprive the American contestants so they fight more often. I’m pretty sure half the people only get picked because their personalities are so opposite, and the producers have no intention of letting them win. That’s just my theory though. The actual photoshoots aren’t very interesting, it’s the interviews that are the best part. Watching them fake nice to each other on set, and back stab each other in the interviews is definitely entertaining. I have to admit that towards the end I probably get a little too invested (MARVIN SHOULD HAVE WON), but that’s all part of the fun.
This show has been around for ages, but I only started watching it this year. A bunch of girls (or guys), compete for the affection of one Bachelor or Bachelorette, who’s usually rich and good looking. There’s a series of dates, one on one and group dates, with a few contestants getting kicked out each week. The winning contestant is supposed to get a proposal, but from what I’ve seen that doesn’t happen a whole lot. It’s basically like slower, speed dating for attractive people who want to be on TV and date someone rich. I couldn’t say exactly what I like about it, but there must be something because I keep watching it. There is nothing less romantic to me than literally competing for someone’s attention while they flirt with other people in front of you, but hey, it must work for some people. I don’t think the success rate is super high, but at least a few of the couples are still going strong.
Keeping Up With the Kardashians
Kim Kardashian is one of the most photographed women of our time, and probably the most filmed aswell. Keeping Up With the Kardashians follows her and her family as they… do whatever it is they do. I don’t know why I watch it but I do. I was house sitting for a couple of weeks a while back and I went through two seasons! How? I don’t know. The thing is you feel sympathetic for them when you’re watching the show, but you still sort of want things to blow up in their faces because it’s more entertaining. Although I’d never want to put my kids on reality TV, I have to admit I’m pretty disappointed we haven’t really seen North! Get with it Kimye.
The Amazing Race
Maybe I’m in denial, but I would not call this trash TV. I am actually on the edge of my seat watching this show, and I refuse to do anything else while it’s on, but it’s a reality show so I’m including it in this list. I don’t know what to tell you, it’s the best. I’m so glad the Australian Amazing Race is coming back because it means two seasons in one year! Basically a bunch of teams travel around the world, completing various challenges in order to win the end prize money, and the prizes at the end of each leg. I grew up watching it with my family, and while my brothers and Dad don’t care for it anymore, my Mum and I still find time to watch it together. Some people scream at the TV for sports, but I reserve my TV screaming for The Amazing Race. Whenever they’re faced with a challenge, I’m faced with a challenge. What would I pick? Could I finish eating that Ox tongue? Would I shave off all my hair for an express pass? No. Not in a million years. But it’s fun to ponder.
