I’m dedicated to bringing a little piece of summer into winter 2014, and one of the ways I will be doing this is by displaying a hint of tan through the cold months! Let me show you how to get the perfect winter tan, using bb favourite Tuscan Tan and their huge range of products.
Just so we’re all on the same page here: the only safe tan is a fake tan. For me, winter fake tanning is a bit different to summer fake tanning. In summer I tend to think it’s okay to apply several layers of fake tan for a really bronze look. But in winter I go for a softer glow. To find the perfect winter tan colour, I tried out the Tuscan Tan range. I am very pale (English heritage!) so one coat of fake tan is usually enough for me.
The products I got my hands on!
This is me. No tan. No makeup.
First of all, I exfoliated my dry winter skin with the Exoliating Sugar Scrub, which smelled AMAZING. I also used the Tan Removal Mitt to remove the remnants of tan from a few weeks ago that were still hanging around on my legs. This mitt was amazing. I could see the tan and dead skin coming off on the glove. I’m really into that kind of thing.
Then it was time for the application. I chose to use latex gloves to protect my hands. You could also use a tanning mitt like the Tuscan Tan Application Mitt which is available in the bellabox store here. The Tuscan Tan Full Self Tan Gel applied really easily, and I was really happy with how it rubbed into my skin. It didn’t have a terrible “fake tan smell”, and the guide colour meant that I didn't miss any spots. Tuscan Tan also comes in a Mousse, which you can check out in the bellabox store here.
I then used the Facial Tanning Serum on my face. Like a lot of you, I get a little bit scared putting tan on my face. Plus my skin is very dry and flakey at the moment. I made sure to increase my moisturiser in the days leading up to my tanning, and used my Clarisonic to cleanse my face an hour before tanning. However, I was very impressed with the texture of the Tanning Serum. It was light and rubbed in very easily, and I was able to blend it into my neck where my body tan finished. It also wasn't a scary dark colour! I prefer to go a little lighter with the fake tan on my face, because I know I can always add some bronzer to match it with my body. The Facial Tanning Serum is available in the bellabox store here.
I always fake tan at night and then sleep with it on. I find this gives the tan the longest time to develop, and avoids the problems of sweating and washing hands too much! Make sure your tan is completely dry before doing this. Sometimes I stand in front of a fan before I go to bed, to be certain that I'm dry. Just in case there are any problems, I would avoid sleeping on your thousand thread count pure white sheets. To be honest I’ve never stained my sheets, but I don’t want to be responsible if you accidentally do!
In the morning I had a shower and rinsed off the tan. The colour was good. Like really good. And here's what I looked like when I went out that night!
Obviously a full photoshoot was required.
I was really happy with this colour. It was perfect for a winter night out. It gave me a beautiful light bronze glow, I didn't look unnaturally dark and I definitely wasn't orange!
I think that one coat of tan is enough for winter, but you might feel differently about this. We’re in Australia, so no tan is ever going to seem totally unnatural. If you want a really light colour that you can control, a gradual tanning moisturiser might be the right choice. Then you can add a little bit of colour over several nights.
Are you going to join me and do some winter tanning? Let me know in the comments!
