For those of you who don’t live in Melbourne and won’t be attending the Melbourne Cup Carnival this year, DON’T WRITE THIS POST OFF JUST YET. These tips are not only ace for the races (if I don’t mind saying so myself), they are also tops for dressier events where you want your makeup to last and last and last all day long, whether it be for a wedding, or an end of year Christmas party (decorations are already in stores, so it’s not too early to say this. I checked with the relevant authorities!)
Here are my top tips for acing your base and the products to match. Couldn’t. Be. Easier.
If you are anything like me, you'll consider your makeup as a part of your outfit. ‘I think I’ll do the red and black dress with a matching lip, winged liner and finger waves’ – is an example of the way one of my best pals and I speak when discussing what we will wear on Saturday night. Makeup makes a look! But there is no point planning your eyes, lips or even your hair without first acing your base – it's the blank canvas you need to start with to perfect any style, and needs more effort and attention than simply slapping on your foundation. The good news? It's not too hard. Here's how to ace that base...
Exfoliate then hydrate – Exfoliating (gently) before you apply your makeup is an insider secret when it comes to pro base creation. Use a non-abrasive powder exfoliant which uses enzymes rather than grainy beads to buff. This way your skin won’t get as irritated. My pick? The Alpha-H Gentle Daily Exfoliant. Once buffed, moisturise. A lightweight yet nourishing one is great for daytime, plus an SPF is essential for day events this time of the year. Try the Nutri-Synergy Dry Skin Moisturiser (actually perfect for all skin types and super gentle) Apply, wait 5 mins and then add your…
Primer – Not only does a primer add extra hydration to your skin, it also helps your base last longer. For a full list of benefits (why primer is the bomb diggety) click here. Try Inika's Certified Oganic Pure Primer - it's very natural! Wait 5 mins before applying your foundation. Why all the waiting? Letting your first product sink into skin will let it do its job before throwing another one into the mix. Remember that thing about too many cooks? This applies here too.
Powder – This will help your base last longer, even if you like to wear liquid foundation (OMG - I do too! Twinsies!) It works to set your foundation in place, a key component in acing it. The Savoir Faire Concealer and Finishing Powder is my pick.
Keep it fresh – How to keep your makeup fresh throughout the day? A tricky one, granted. Take a concealer with you for touch ups (see above) and a little translucent powder too. The other essential in my books (or bag) is a rosewater spray - I wear Kosmea's Hydrating Rosewater Mist. A couple of spritzes not only set makeup before you leave the house, it also helps to breathe a little life and moisture back into a base 6 hours in. In short – this stuff rocks.
Illuminate – Looking fresh and young is super easy with an illuminator. Use it on your brow bone, on the tops of your cheek bones and across your forehead (sparingly) Learn more here. This will bring the stunning features of your face forward. Good makeup is all about highlighting the assets you’ve got. Try the Bloom Cream Blush Duo, and use a little of the blush on the apples of your cheeks while you are at it. Lovely!
