I don't know about you, but the whole concept of spring cleaning never really took off with me, except in two areas; my wardrobe and my beauty bag.
Cleaning out the linen cupboard or reorganising the kitchen isn't really as high on my list of new season to-do's as sorting my winter woolens from my summer dresses. And when it comes to beauty? Your spring cosmetics kit should also reflect the new season, not to mention your skincare routine, to combat the challenges the changes in the weather throw at your face (I'm talking to you increased sun exposure!) Here are 3 key looks to go for when spring cleaning your beauty routine, and which products we are loving for the new season...
#1- The hydrated complexion
IN - Gentle facial exfoliators, light moisturisers, eye creams, serums
OUT - Really dense creams, rough exfoliators
Dewy skin is one of the beauty Holy Grails in my books, ever since a guy I know had a chance meeting with a 'celeb' years ago (Disclaimer: when I say celeb, I think she'd been on Big Brother or Australian Idol but I swear, she was totally big news at the time!) As he recounted his story of meeting the pretty lady, the envitable question came up 'Was she as stunning in real life?' Answer: Yes. 'She had the most incredible skin. It looked super dewy and glowy and soft. Yeah..her skin was awesome', we were told.
For some reason I have never forgotten this (even though I can't remember who the girl was - what does that tell you about my beauty memory?!) and equate amazingly glowy skin with a relaxed and easy beauty, recognisable by even the most beauty-clueless of guys and girls alike. For the bod you need a good quality scrub to buff away dead skin cells and leave you all soft. To add in the moisture you need a quality hydrating lotion that not only sinks into skin, but helps to maintain this hydration long into the day/night. Click over here to learn my top picks.
On to the face. Chances are you are already using a good quality moisturiser (if you aren't may I recommend emerginC's Phytocell Cream which is perfect for warmer months. Not too heavy, not too light...) If you are, your skin will already be reaping the rewards of hydration.
But sometimes this isn't enough. Skin can still become dry - and dryness does not a glowy face make! Dry areas can crop up under the eyes, which is home to super delicate skin. And this is often the cause of creasing in your under eye concealer! Dry patches can also appear around the t-zone from over zealous cleansing and exfoliating. All of these things can make it harder to ace your base - makeup doesn't always cover up skin sins. Reach for a rich under eye cream to tap on before your concealer (try Savoir Faire's Concealer and Finishing Powder) - don't just save it for bedtime. This will help with the creasing. I love benefit It's Potent! Eye Cream.
A creamy primer will also help your base look glowier as well as giving your foundation extra wear time, which means less touching up! Winner! Try Inika's Certified Organic Pure Primer. Finally, using an illuminator to play up all the areas you want to highlight will make you complexion sing! Try MeMeMe's Beat the Blues Illuminator.
#2 -Anti-ageing (it's not for fixing - it's for preventing!)
OUT - Foundations without an SPF, harsh cleansers and toners
IN- Products containing SPFs, appropriate anti-ageing products
One of the best anti-ageing formulas is an SPF! Your base products should also include an SPF, even in winter - the only time it isn't essential to wear a foundation with an SPF is at nighttime! We love True Solutions All Day Moisture SPF 30+ Tinted Cream which adds a hint of colour, moisturises and contains an SPF all in one! For a fuller coverage, that still looks natural and contains an SPF, try the Inika Mineral Foundation which is also vegan, long lasting and is 100% natural.
People are often scared of anti-ageing formulas, thinking that they aren't suitable for them due to age or the kind of products that they are found in. But anti-ageing isn't for aged skin - it is actually for prevention and should begin to be incorporated during your 20's. If you are worried about creams being too rich, look for anti-ageing formulas in unexpected products. One of my current favourites is the Guerlain L'Or Radiance Concentrate with Pure Gold which acts like a regular primer except that it includes 24-carat gold for extreme radiance and provides ultimate hydration and anti-ageing benefits - what a wonder product! I also personally love the Yes to Blueberries Age Refresh Brightening Facial Towelettes which are ideal for removing makeup while being enriched with organic blueberries, lemon peel and apple to keep your skin feeling and looking young.
#3 - Colour is for everyone
OUT - Nothing - wear what makes you feel happy!
IN- Colour products to bring you into spring
Colour is called for come spring! Try to incorporate one new colour into your beauty bag this season, whether it be for the eyes, cheeks, lips or nails. Need some inspiration? The Savoir Faire Mini Lipstick in Showgirl is ace for your pout, the B by Bloom Col.lecta Eyeshadow Duo offers two spring worthy shades for lids and Ozotic's fresh Neon Green Polish on your nails. Try just one colour product at a time to look chic, not OTT.
And there you have it? Have you spring cleaned your beauty bag or routine yet? What are you waiting for? Let us know how you go! - Lauren
