Great skin calls for amazing products as well as a few lifestyle choices - but these needn't be unattainable! Here are our top tips of what you need for a total skincare overhaul to help you glow on the inside and the outside and LOVE the skin you are in!
Vitamins! Antioxidants! Essential Fatty Acids! Get them any way you can...
I'm not sure about you, but when I read about the beneficial components of a healthy diet, I'll admit, I often skim over it. Too technical! Too preachy! No fun! But they really, these things are important when it comes to skincare. Here is the most simplified version I could come up with, for those that like me, never really got it. Here's why you need them and how to get them, through both diet and skincare products...
Essential Fatty Acids:
These babies are 'essential' for healthy hair and nails, as your body doesn't actually produce any, so encorporating them into your diet is a must. Walnuts, and oily fish, like salmon and tuna are your best bet. An amazing beauty product containing antioxidants, and which can be used in a heck-load of different ways, is rosehip oil. Try Rose-Hip Vital Rosehip Oil or Kosmea's Skin Clinic Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil on your face, cuticles, ends of hair - even your elbows! It is super nourishing and great to apply before bedtime. Plus, you only need a little, so they last for ages.
These are the things that fight free radicals - don't know what they are? Click here. But in short, the common causes of free radicals are intense and prolonged sun exposure, smoking, stress and obesity. These nasties can cause wrinkling on the skin and have been associated with pre-cancers. However, if they are combatted with antioxidants, you can slow them down. Where to find them? Uncooked and brightly coloured fruit and veg are top of the antioxidant list. Try berries, carrots, peas and sweet potatoes - the less 'altered' from their natural state, the better!
Vitamin C and E:
These vitamins also fall under the broader 'antioxidant' category too - but deserved a special mention! So technically, there are heaps of vitamins that are good for you; the more the merrier! But these two are really important when it comes to acing great skin. Vitamin C helps to maintain collagen production and the elastin in the skin (which obviously help to keep it looking young and refreshed) Kiwi fruit, oranges and strawberries are full of the stuff - plus are delish to boot! Veg with vitamin C includes broccoli and dark leafy greens (like kale and spinach) For a daily moisturiser that's packed full of essential vitamins, you can't go past John Plunkett Essentials Multi Vitamin Moisturiser!
Vitamin E is super similar - it helps the skin to retain it's natural moisture levels. Avocado, nuts and seeds plus wholegrains all contain vitamin E - get some in your diet stat. A beauty product we love, containing these vitamins, is the emerginC Hydra Repair Intensive Topical Infusion Capsules. These small miracle capsules provide major hydration benefits and increase lipids in the skin necessary to keep a youthful glow. They really are miracle capsules - just ask emerginC fan, Jennifer Anniston! And dayum, doesn't she look good?
Remember your regular skincare routine!
To promote a healthy glow, one of the most important things to do is stick to a regular skincare routine. Try to think outside the box though. A cleanser for your skincare concerns, an exfoliant you can use according to your skin type and a hydrating moisturiser are all essentials, but why not also consider other products too? An amazing daily inclusion is Proplenish. This wonder powder contains Marine Collagen which replicates the collagen naturally produced by our bodies during our younger years that stops being produced as we age. Best of all, it's tasteless, odorless, and has no fat, sugar, carbs or any other potential allergen such as wheat, soy and gluten.
Seriously, stick with an SPF!
Are you sick of hearing people bang on about using SPFs, but are still guilty of not using one everyday? Of course, the choice is yours, but why go sans SPF when it could make you look 30 when you are 40? 40 when you are 50? 50 when you are 60? I could go on, or just show you a pic of what sun damage looks like before it become really evident. TV presenter Carrie Bickmore took a UV scan and was shocked at the results...
She's since opted to wear a sunscreen everyday to try and reverse as much of the damage as possible. For you? Why not try a a daily UV protector and moisturising cream combined with broad spectrum sun-protection. It's an easy product to use after your cleasing steps, and before you apply your primer and makeup. We love the True Solutions Total Age Protector SPF 30+. This untinted cream protects against sun damage whilst nourishing the skin. It only takes 30 seconds to apply every morning to commit to a lifetime of glowing skin! Pretty sweeeeet deal, right?
Get your beauty sleep!
We've all pulled a late night, before getting up in the morning (read: dragging ourselves out of bed), only to be horrified with our reflection! Skin needs sleep to stay healthy too. Try to get to bed early at least a couple of nights a week. If you are a night owl and finding the transition a little difficult, treat yourself before early nights with a lush product designed for use specifically at night. We love the Be In Awe Shaanta Night Balm, an ultra moisturising, non-greasy product that provides intense hydration will you sleep.
Even trying out one of these tips will help give your skin a little extra glow, and nothing will amke you feel more confident in getting ready for the upcoming silly season like great skin will! Enjoy! - Lauren
